
Braves Purchase Shafer's Contract

The Gateway Grizzles are proud to announce that they have sold the contractual rights of pitcher Aaron Shafer to the Atlanta Braves organization.
Shafer, whose brother Jake Shafer is also a member of the Grizzlies pitching staff, went 2-0 with a 0.61 ERA in two starts during his short stint with the Grizzlies.
During his last outing in a Grizzlies uniform, the 24-year-old righty tossed 8 2/3 innings of shutout baseball against the Evansville Otters, striking out 10 batters in the process.
"We are very excited to add Aaron Shafer to the Braves organization," said Braves Assistant Director of Player Development Ronnie Richardson. "He will have an opportunity to pitch and continue his development in our minor league system."
A former 2nd round pick (65th overall selection) of the Chicago Cubs in the 2008 MLB Draft, the Moscow Mills, Missouri native reached as high as Double-A with the Tennessee Smokies in three seasons with the Cubs organization prior to his stint with the Grizzlies.
During his time with the Cubs Southern League affiliate, the Wichita State product posted a 2-2 record with a 5.03 ERA in 25 appearances. The 6-5, 218 pounder was also was drafted in the 16th round of the 2005 MLB Draft out of high school by the Cleveland Indians.
"The Braves just got themselves one heck of a kid," said Grizzlies Field Manager Phil Warren. "Aaron is a great pitcher, a great competitor, and I am definitely looking forward to watching him develop with an organization that has such a great reputation when it comes to their starting pitching."
Shafer will report immediately to the Lynchburg Hillcats. The Hillcats are the Carolina League Advanced-A Affiliate for the Braves organization.
