
Fred Brathwaite Assigned to Syracuse for Conditioning

Syracuse, NY (February 17, 2004) - The Syracuse Crunch announced today that the Columbus Blue Jackets have assigned goaltender Fred Brathwaite to Syracuse for a conditioning assignment and recalled goaltender Pascal Leclaire. The team also announced that goaltender Andrew Penner has been reassigned to Dayton (ECHL).
Brathwaite, 31, has appeared in 16 games for the Blue Jackets this season with a 2-9-1 record, a 3.41 goals against average, and a .891 save percentage. In 249 career NHL games with Edmonton, Calgary, St. Louis and Columbus, Brathwaite has posted a 79-97-37 record and a 2.72 goals against average. In 35 career AHL games with Cape Breton and Saint John, Brathwaite has posted a 15-17-0 record and a 3.72 goals against average. A native of Ottawa, Ontario, Brathwaite was signed as a free agent by Columbus on June 2, 2003.
Leclaire, 20, has appeared in 31 games with the Crunch this season, posting a 15-10-3 record with a 2.85 goals-against average, a .920 save percentage and one shutout. His 15 wins are tied for eighth in the AHL, while his 945 saves rank seventh. This marks his third recall to Columbus this season. He served as Brathwaite's backup November 22 vs. the NY Islanders and Marc Denis' backup on December 31 vs. San Jose. A native of Repentigny, Quebec, Leclaire was selected by Columbus with their first pick, 8th overall, in the 2001 Entry Draft.
Penner, 21, has appeared in 30 games with Dayton this season, posting an 11-16-0 record with a 3.98 goals against average and a .877 save percentage. Penner has yet to appear in an AHL game, serving as back-up twice. A native of Scarborough, Ontario, Penner was signed as a free agent by Columbus on September 17, 2001.
Syracuse hosts Binghamton on Wednesday, February 18 for Scooby-Doo night at the Crunch. Game time is set for 7 pm. On Saturday, February 21 Wilkes-Barre/Scranton visits the War Memorial at Oncenter for a 7:30 p.m. start.
