Four Two out Runs Helps Push Erie over Richmond

The SeaWolves used superb two-out hitting on Friday night at UPMC Park as they took down the Richmond Flying Squirrels 6-5.

Erie jumped ahead in the bottom of the second against Richmond starter Bryan Brickhouse. Quincy Nieporte and Eric De La Rosa each singled with two outs to keep the inning alive for Dane Myers. Byers brought home both baserunners on a two-run double for a 2-0 lead. The hit snapped a four-game hitless streak for Myers. Erie has now scored first in all seven home games this season.

Richmond cut the lead down to a run against Erie starter Austin Bergner in the top of the fourth when Tyler Fitzgerald homered for the second time in as many games.

The 'Wolves quickly responded in the home half of the fourth. Andre Lipcius snapped a five-game hitless streak with a leadoff double. He advanced to third on a Daniel Cabrera groundout and scored on a Nieporte sacrifice fly. De La Rosa then took his first walk of the season, stole second and scored on Myers second knock of the game for a 4-1 advantage.

The Squirrels again cut into the lead in the fifth. Jacob Heyward and Shane Matheny started the inning with back-to-back singles. Heyward would later score on a two-out error making it 4-2.

Erie responded again in the next half inning to go back ahead by three as Kerry Carpenter doubled with two outs and scored on a Lipcius base hit.

Richmond closed the gap again in the sixth and seventh innings. Frankie Tostado led off and homered off of Joe Navilhon in the sixth. Will Wilson led off the seventh with a base hit and moved to third on a Diego Rincones knock against reliever Brendan White. Sean Roby drove in Wilson on a sacrifice fly to once again make it a one-run game.

The SeaWolves got a much-needed insurance run in the seventh against reliever Blake Rivera. Gage Workman led off his fourth double of the season and advanced to third on a Dillon Dingler groundout. He scored on a Kerry Carpenter groundout for a 6-4 lead.

Erie summoned reliever Yaya Chentouf in the top of the ninth. Chentouf walked Wilson and yielded a single to Rincones, putting the tying run on base. With one out, Tostado singled home Wilson making it a one-run game. Chentouf battled back, striking out Fitzgerald and inducing a game-ending pop out from Brandon Martorano, preserving the win and earning his second save.

Navilhon (3-0) earned the win in relief allowing a run on three hits with no walks and three strikeouts in 1.1 innings.

Brickhouse (0-1) took the loss allowing five runs on seven hits with a walk and five strikeouts in 5.2 innings.

Bergner took a no-decision despite tossing his best outing of the season. The Erie righty allowed two runs, one earned, on three hits with three walks and four strikeouts over 4.2 innings.
