Four-Straight Wins

July 8, 2022 - Eastern League (EL)
Portland Sea Dogs News Release

Last night the Sea Dogs used an 11-run first inning to work their way to a 16-1 win over the Rumble Ponies. Every Sea Dogs hitter in the lineup came around to score in the top of the first. Binelas and Rafaela hit back-to-back homers on consecutive pitches to bring in the first two runs. Kole Cottam drove in a run with a double, Izzy Wilson knocked in another on an RBI single, and Nick Sogard collected an RBI double of his own to make the score 7-0. Binelas pushed in his second RBI of the inning with a sacrifice fly and Scott made sure every batter scored with a three-run homer, capping off an 11-0 inning. Portland went right back to business in the top of the second inning. Tyler Dearden walked to lead off the inning. Sogard crushed a homer to right-center, driving in two more runs, increasing the Sea Dogs lead to 13-0. The Sea Dogs offense struck again in the top of the third inning. Scott led off the inning with a single and, one out later, Kole Cottam walked. Izzy Wilson stepped up to the plate and launched a three-run homer. It was his third of the season and boosted the Portland lead to 16-0. Both teams were scoreless until the bottom of the ninth where Binghamton scored their only run, leading to a 16-1 win for Portland.

DOUBLE-DIGIT MADNESS - Over the first three games of the series against the Rumble Ponies, the Sea Dogs have put together 11 or more runs in each game. Portland has scored double-digits in seven games this season, with 16 being the highest total. This week marks the first time that the Sea Dogs have done this in consecutive games, scoring 11 on Monday, 12 on Tuesday, and 16 on Thursday.

SECOND-HALF SCORING - It has been a strong start to the second half for the Sea Dogs, coming into Friday with a 7-2 record. Through the first nine games, Portland has outscored their opponents 71 to 44, creating a 27-run differential. In the second half overall, the Sea Dogs have reached double-digits four times, increasing their season total up to seven.

SCOTT STILL ROLLING - Helping out in the offensive showcase on Thursday, Stephen Scott extended his on-base streak to eight games. He finished the night 2-for4, driving in three runs with his first-inning homer. Over the eight-game streak, Scott is 11-for-31 (.355), with one home run, five RBI, seven walks, and six strikeouts. This streak dates back to the opening game of the second half against New Hampshire on June 28.

FINDING A GROOVE - Since making it into the second half, David Hamilton has been heating up. Hamilton has been a reliable piece in the lineup, playing in eight of the first nine games of the second half. During these games, he is 12-for-30 (.400) with two home runs, five RBI, six walks, and five strikeouts. As if his production at the plate wasn't enough, Hamilton has put together a .514 on-base percentage, has stolen six bases, and has come around to score 11 runs over his last eight games played.

PITCHING MATCHUP - The southpaw, Jay Groome, is set to make another start for the Sea Dogs. Groome posted his best month of the season in June, tossing 26.1 innings with a 2.73 ERA over five appearances (four starts). He also had his best month in terms of strikeouts, whiffing 28 batters, helping himself out by tying his season-high mark of 10 on June 21. His first start in July didn't disappoint either, as he worked through 5.0 innings, allowing just one run on two hits while striking out seven in a no-decision outing against the Fisher Cats. ‚¬Å
