Four-Run Seventh Lifts Power to 4-2 Win

August 12, 2019 - South Atlantic League (SAL) - West Virginia Power News Release

SALISBURY, Md. - Julio Rodriguez's two-run double finished off a four-run seventh inning that put the Power ahead for good in a 4-2 win over the Delmarva Shorebirds Monday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.

Both starters exchanged scoreless frames early, as Nate Fisher put two zeroes on the board before Delmarva (31-18, 79-39) broke through in the third. With two outs in the inning, the top of the Shorebirds order delivered with back-to-back base hits and a Johnny Rizer RBI single gave Delmarva a 1-0 lead. The Shorebirds tacked on another run in the following stanza, as Nick Horvath launched a solo homer down the left-field line and extended the 'Birds lead to 2-0.

Fisher saw his outing come to a close after he twirled a scoreless fifth inning and was replaced by Sal Biasi (6-3) in the sixth. In his first game since returning from the injured list, Biasi retired the Shorebirds in order and kept the deficit at two.

In the seventh, Onil Pena reached on an error by the shortstop, Adam Hall, Mike Salvatore singled and Charlie McConnell advanced the two into scoring position with a fly out to right. Ryan Ramiz broke the shutout with an RBI single off Ruben Garcia (1-2) that made it 2-1, and Matt Sanders followed with an RBI base knock of his own that tied the game at two. The next hitter, Julio, roped a double into the right-center field gap that plated both runners and thrust the Power (25-25, 62-58) ahead 4-2.

Reeves Martin replaced Biasi after stretch time and spun a shutdown frame with two straight strikeouts that left Cody Roberts stranded at third after he led off the inning with a double. Martin followed with another scoreless inning in the eighth and kept the two-run West Virginia lead intact for Dayeison Arias (S,13) in the ninth.

Arias retired the first batter of the ninth inning on one pitch, but lost a long battle with Roberts on a walk, which brought the tying run to the dish. The Power closer buckled down and retired the next two hitters on strikes to finish off a 4-2 West Virginia win in the series opener.

The Power continues their three-game series with the Delmarva Shorebirds Tuesday evening at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium, with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m. RHP Ryne Inman (8-7, 4.39 ERA) gets the ball for West Virginia, while Delmarva sends righty Dallas Litscher (2-0, 0.00 ERA) to the bump. Pregame coverage begins at 6:45 p.m. on The Jock 1300 and 1340 AM, as well as online at wvpower.com and via the TuneIn Radio App and MiLB First Pitch App.
