SAN ANTONIO - The San Antonio Missions began a six-game series with the Corpus Christi Hooks on Thursday night. The Missions utilized three home runs on Thursday to take down the rival Hooks. Jake Perez hit a solo homer, Cole Cummings hit a pinch-hit, game-tying homer and Daniel Johnson hit a three-run, 10th-inning homer. San Antonio needed 10 innings to secure a 6-2 victory. The club improves to 6-2 in extra-inning games this season.
Jared Kollar was the starting pitcher for the Missions making his second Double-A appearance. The right-hander surrendered the lead in the second inning. Jordan Brewer and Chad Stevens began the frame with back-to-back base hits. After retiring the next two batters, C.J. Stubbs drove in Brewer with a single to left-center field. The Hooks took a 1-0 lead.
Colton Gordon was the starting pitcher for the Hooks. The southpaw tossed two scoreless innings before allowing the Missions to tie the game in the third inning. Leading off the inning, Jake Perez homered to left field. His first long ball of the season made it a 1-1 game. For Perez, it was his first home run since September 30, 2021, and just the third of his career.
Corpus Christi regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Brewer began the frame with a base hit and stole second base. Luis Aviles Jr. flew out and Brewer advanced to third base with two outs. J.C. Correa drove in Brewer with a single to left field.
Kollar recorded a quality start after lasting six innings. The right-hander struck out just one batter while allowing two runs on six hits. James Bourque took over in the seventh inning and tossed two scoreless innings. Bourque walked three batters while striking out three batters.
Gordon allowed one earned run in four innings of work for the Hooks. The southpaw allowed five hits and one walk while striking out seven batters. Cesar Gomez and Derek West each contributed with a scoreless inning of relief. Tyler Brown allowed one base hit during two scoreless innings in the seventh and eighth.
Cole McDonald took the mound in the top of the ninth inning for the save attempt. Ray-Patrick Didder drew a lead-off walk. Chandler Seagle, attempting a sacrifice bunt, popped out which resulted in a double play. Cole Cummings was called on to pinch-hit for Kervin Pichardo. Cummings tied the game with a home run to right field. He is the first Missions player since Tyrone Taylor on May 10, 2019 to hit a pinch-hit homer. The game was tied 2-2.
In the top of the 10th inning, Perez was the designated runner at second base and McDonald remained in the game. Juan Fernandez quickly gave the Missions the lead with a single to right-center field. Ripken Reyes reached base on a bunt single and Fernandez advanced to third base. Reyes stole second base and both runners were in scoring position. Michael De La Cruz reached base on a fielder's choice with Fernandez being tagged out at home. Daniel Johnson connected on a three-run home run to right field. His fifth long ball of the season made it a 6-2 ballgame.
