Tirso Ornelas Named Texas League Player of the Month

SAN ANTONIO - Former Missions outfielder Tirso Ornelas has been named Texas League Player of the Month for the month of June. This was announced by Minor League Baseball on Thursday. For Ornelas, this marks his first career monthly award. He was previously named Texas League Player of the Week for the week of June 12-18.

In 21 games for the Missions, Ornelas led the Texas League in batting average (.378), total bases (59), RBI (26) and on-base percentage (1.090). Ornelas finished the month second in the league with 34 hits and second in the league with a .556 slugging percentage. His six homers were good for the fifth most in the Texas League.

During the month of June, Ornelas had 11 multi-hit games and had hitting streaks of six and nine games along the way. Ornelas was promoted to Triple-A El Paso on June 28th.

This is the third award for a Missions player this season. Left-hander Daniel Camarena was named Texas League Pitcher of the Week for the week of May 29-June 4.

Ornelas is the first Missions player to win a monthly award since Adrian Martinez was awarded Pitcher of the Month for July of 2021. He is the first Missions player to be awarded Player of the Month since Fernando Tatis Jr. for May of 2018.

The outfielder was signed by the padres as an international free agent out of Mexico on March 31, 2017. He played for the Missions in 2022 and batted .288 with seven homers, 28 doubles and 51 RBI in 112 games. Ornelas appeared in three games for El Paso during the 2022 season. In 2023, he batted .273 with nine homers, 16 doubles and 46 RBI in 67 games for the Missions.
