Clinton LumberKings News Release
BELOIT, WI - For the first time in three years the Clinton LumberKings hit a grand slam and then, two innings later, hit another in an 13-3 win over the Beloit Snappers at Pohlman Field on Wednesday night. Nick Thurman and Kristian Brito were responsible for the LumberKings (21-29) slams and were joined by Anthony Jimenez and Nick Zammarelli with home runs to tie a season-high for home runs in a game with four.
The LumberKings slugged their first home run in the top of the first inning off of Snappers starter Mitchell Jordan. Bryson Brigman singled with one out in the inning and was followed by walks to Joe Rizzo and Jimenez loading the bases for Thurman. On the first pitch of the at-bat Thurman crushed a no doubter into right field for a grand slam home run, his second long fly of the season.
The grand slam was the first by a LumberKing since Tyler O'Neil hit one against Beloit on August 16, 2014 vs. Beloit in Clinton.
In the bottom of the first the Snappers (26-26) answered the LumberKinngs with two runs on a two-run single from Edwin Diaz.
The Snappers added just one more run on the night on a Miguel Mercedes home run in the bottom of the sixth inning off reliever Michael Rivera. The home run was Mercedes 10 th of the season.
Clinton added their second home run of the night in the top of the third inning. Jordan (1-4) began the frame by retiring the first two batters he faced but gave up three straight singles to Thurman, Luis Rengifo, and Zammerelli. With the bases loaded Kristian Brito lined a 2-2 pitch right down the left field line that just snuck in fair for the LumberKings second grand slam of the game.
Jimenez hit the LumberKings third home run of the night in the top of the sixth inning, his team-leading sixth home run of the season.
The LumberKinngs final rally of the night came in top of the eighth inning when they pushed two more runs across. Zammarelli led off with a home run to right, his third home run of the year. Joe Rizzo capped the rally with a RBI single to left that scored Dimas Ojeda.
In his LumberKings debut, Rivera (1-0) earned the win for Clinton. The righty, just added to the roster before the game, worked two innings of relief to earn his first win of the season.
The LumberKings will wrap up their three-game road trip and series with the Beloit Snappers on Thursday night. Right-handed pitcher Ljay Newsome (4-4, 4.47) will take the ball for Clinton and face Beloit's right-handed pitcher Brendan Butler (1-3, 2.42). First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM (CDT) with the pregame show beginning at 6:45 PM (CDT) on 100.3 FM WCCI Erik Oas is on the call.
