June 29, 2006 - Eastern League (EL1)
Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release
Binghamton Mets righthanded pitchers Mike Pelfrey and Henry Owens, first baseman Michel Abreu and outfielder Jorge Padilla have been chosen for the 24-man Northern Division team that will participate in the Eastern League All-Star Game, taking on the Southern Division squad at Blair County Ballpark in Altoona, PA on July 12th.
The New York Mets' first-round pick in the 2005 draft, Pelfrey has progressed to the Double-A level in his first professional season, going 3-2 with a 2.88 ERA with Binghamton since being called up from High-A St. Lucie April 28th. The 22-year-old Wichita, KS native has thrown 59 1/3 innings in his 11 B-Mets starts, striking out 66. Pelfrey was one of two B-Mets chosen by the fans.
Despite missing a month with an elbow injury, the 27-year-old Owens has also put up gaudy numbers. Owens, a native of Miami, FL, hasn't been scored upon in 19 of his 20 relief appearances, compiling a 0.79 ERA. Selected by the Mets from Pittsburgh in the Rule 5 draft prior to the 2005 season, Owens has struck out 47 and walked seven in 22 2/3 innings, converting all nine of his save opportunities.
Since joining Binghamton April 28th, Abreu has done nothing but hit. The 27-year-old is the EL's leader in batting (.333), clubbing six homers and driving in 29 runs in 54 games. The San Jose, Costa Rica native is in his first professional season in the US after defecting from Cuba in 2004.
Binghamton's other fan selection, Padilla is hitting .281 with six homers and 33 RBI, pacing the club with 74 hits in 70 games. The 27-year-old native of Carolina, Puerto Rico was signed by the Mets as a minor league free agent this off-season after eight seasons in the Philadelphia organization, including two seasons with the Reading Phillies in 2002 and 2003.
Tonight, the Binghamton Mets begin a six-game homestand with a doubleheader against the Reading Phillies beginning at 5:30. Friday, the New Hampshire Fisher Cats come to NYSEG Stadium to start a four-game series.
