June 29, 2006 - Eastern League (EL1) News Release
ALTOONA, PA - The Altoona Curve, in conjunction with the Eastern League, today announced the rosters for the 2006 UPMC Health Plan Eastern League All-Star Game, which will take place Wednesday, July 12th at Blair County Ballpark in Altoona, PA.
The 2006 UPMC Health Plan Eastern League All-Star Game will feature some of the brightest stars from the league's 12 teams, as the top players from the Eastern League's Southern Division (Akron Aeros, Altoona Curve, Bowie Baysox, Erie SeaWolves, Harrisburg Senators and Reading Phillies) will square off against All-Star players from the league's Northern Division clubs (Binghamton Mets, Connecticut Defenders, New Britain Rock Cats, New Hampshire Fisher Cats, Portland Sea Dogs and Trenton Thunder).
Each roster consists of 25 players, including at least three players from each of the Eastern League's 12 teams. Every club is also represented by at least one position player and one pitcher, as selected by fans of each respective team through Rite Aid Fan Balloting at the 12 E.L. ballparks. The remaining selections were made through voting by league media, managers and officials. The field staffs of the host Altoona Curve (Pirates) and defending Northern Division champion Portland Sea Dogs, led by managers Tim Leiper and Todd Claus, will serve as the coaches for the contest.
The host Curve have the most All-Star representatives among the league's 12 clubs with six players selected, while the Trenton Thunder (Yankees) follow with five players on the Northern Division squad. Nine different E.L. teams landed four All-Star players in the game, while the Bowie Baysox will be represented by three players on July 12th.
Several of the 50 All-Star players initially selected to participate in the E.L. All-Star Game are among the top-rated prospects in their respective organizations. 13 players entered the season listed by Baseball America as one of the Top 10 prospects in their organization. Three players--Trenton pitcher Philip Hughes, Reading pitcher Gio Gonzalez and Harrisburg catcher Salomon Manriquez--will have the additional honor of playing in the 2006 MLB Futures Game at PNC Park in Pittsburgh on Sunday, July 9th.
