Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release
Michel Abreu homered twice in Game One, but the Binghamton Mets picked up just four hits in Game Two, splitting a doubleheader with the Reading Phillies, winning 7-6 and losing 6-3 at NYSEG Stadium Thursday. The B-Mets have dropped three of their last four.
In the first game, Reading (32-45) scored twice with two out in the first on RBI hits by Angel Chavez and Matt Padgett. However, the B-Mets countered with three of their own in the bottom of the frame. After Wilson Batista reached on a one-out single, Jorge Padilla followed with a two-run shot. Abreu, the next hitter, homered as well for a 3-2 B-Mets lead.
Once Reading went up 5-3 in the third on an RBI double by Padgett and a two-run double off the bat of Jason Jaramillo, Binghamton (34-44) once again answered in the bottom of the inning, as Abreu tied the score with a two-run shot to left-center, scoring Padilla, who'd singled.
Gary Burnham's RBI single in the fourth gave Reading a 6-5 lead, but Batista singled in the bottom of the sixth and came home on Padilla's RBI double, tying the score. The B-Mets scored the deciding run in the fifth when Jay Caligiuri led off by singling off Talley Haines (1-2), moved to second on Ambiorex Concepcion's sacrifice bunt and scored on Rashad Eldridge's pinch-hit double.
Eddie Camacho (2-1) tossed a scoreless 1 1/3 innings of relief for the win, while Henry Owens struck out two in a 1-2-3 ninth for his 10th save in as many chances.
In the nightcap, RBI by Angel Chavez, Jesus Merchan and Peeter Ramos gave the Phillies a 3-0 lead after 3 ½ innings against lefty Rich Rundles (0-1), who was making his B-Mets debut. However, the B-Mets rallied to tie beginning in the fourth. Zach Segovia (4-4) hit the leadoff man Caligiuri with a pitch before Ray Navarrete doubled him to third. Caligiuri came home on an RBI groundout by Kevin Rios before Mike DiFelice scored Navarrete with a sacrifice fly to left. In the fifth, Batista walked with one out before Eldridge drove him in with a triple to right, tying the score at three.
Reading loaded the bases with one out in the sixth before pinch-hitter Burnham cleared them with a three-run double to right, earning Reading a split. Chris Key kept the B-Mets off the scoreboard the final two innings to earn his sixth save.
Friday, the B-Mets start a four-game series with the New Hampshire Fisher Cats. Miguel Pinango (1-6, 4.41) will start for Binghamton against lefty David Purcey (2-0, 3.12) of New Hampshire. Game time is 7:00 from NYSEG Stadium with the Horizons Federal Credit Union Pre-Game Show kicking off the broadcast at 6:45 on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
