December 19, 2015 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release
SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Add Brian Foster to the list of goalies who have posted a shutout for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins this season, as his 30 saves on Saturday night helped the team capture a 3-0 victory over the Syracuse Crunch at Oncenter War Memorial Arena.
The win marked Foster's first career AHL shutout and the Penguins' fourth clean sheet in five games.
The Penguins got on the board first when Tom Kostopoulos accepted an Oskar Sundqvist pass in the slot and put it behind Crunch goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy 6:20 into the opening frame.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton looked to have taken a 2-0 lead in the second period by stuffing a puck past Vasilevskiy amidst a lengthy netfront scramble, but the initial goal call was overturned after an official review deemed the net had been dislodged prior to the puck crossing the goal line.
Will O'Neill and Tom Kühnhackl scored 1:46 apart at 3:33 and 5:19 of the third period, pushing the Penguins to a 3-0 lead over the Crunch.
Foster's shutout bid came down to the very last seconds of the game, when he had to make a glove save on a wide-open Anthony DeAngelo, the Crunch's leading scorer, with time ticking down in the third.
Foster's final save ensured that the Penguins went into the holiday break without surrendering a single even strength goal since Dec. 9, a span of five games.
Syracuse's power play came into the game with a 26.3% success rate in its last nine games, but was shut down by the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton penalty kill on its two opportunities Likewise, the Penguins' power play was unable to convert on its two chances.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton heads into a six-day break built into the league schedule for the holidays with a 21-5-0-1 record and the top spot in the Atlantic Division. The next game on the Penguins' schedule is Saturday, Dec. 26 at Giant Center against the Hershey Bears.
