Cleveland Monsters News Release
CHARLOTTE, NC - In the third of eight meetings between the two teams this season, Cleveland's Lake Erie Monsters were defeated by the Charlotte Checkers at Bojangles Coliseum in Charlotte, NC on Saturday by a final score of 4-1. With the loss, the Monsters fell to 15-8-1-2 overall this season and with a .635 points percentage, currently occupy fourth place alone in the AHL's Central Division standings.
After a scoreless opening period, the Checkers rattled off three goals in a span of 67 seconds in the middle stanza when Derek Ryan made it 1-0 Charlotte on the power-play at 8:50 before Brody Sutter and Keegan Lowe posted markers at even strength at 9:14 and 10:07 respectively, spelling the end of the night for Monsters starting goaltender Anton Forsberg.
Monsters captain Ryan Craig pulled Lake Erie within a pair at 14:30 of the period with his sixth goal of the season, a power-play tally set up Daniel Zaar, before Charlotte's Trevor Carrick sealed a 4-1 Checkers win with an empty-netter at 18:36 of the third, the final frame's lone score.
Brad Thiessen stopped each of the nine pucks he faced in his Monsters debut after relieving Forsberg at 10:07 of the second period, but Forsberg took the loss in net despite a 20-save performance. Daniel Altshuller earned the victory between the pipes for the Checkers by virtue of a 36-save showing.
