Springfield Falcons News Release

Springfield, MA - The Springfield Falcons battled back after losing a two-goal lead on Saturday night to beat the Providence Bruins by a 4-2 score at the MassMutual Center.

The opening period might not have featured any scoring, but it had plenty of action in terms of physical play between the two rivals. The sides got into their first scrum at the 8:39 mark as all ten skaters convened in front of the benches. That resulted in three Bruin penalties and a pair of Falcon infractions. Eric Selleck and Colton Hargrove dropped the gloves at the 11:36 mark, fighting to the corner of the Falcon zone.

Period number two saw the offense finally come alive as the Falcons scored two goals, both via special teams. Craig Cunningham intercepted a play in the neutral zone and found Ross Mauermann, who went in-tight and beat Malcolm Subban with a shot blocker-side. The goal, scored at 8:18, was a short-handed marker. The Falcons' power play would awaken just moments later as Philip Samuelsson's shot from the side of the net found Jon DiSalvatore, who batted the puck out of mid-air for his first goal as a Falcon at 13:52. Providence would get a goal late in the frame as Alex Khokhlachev tipped a Ben Youds shot past Niklas Treutle at 18:22. Seth Griffith added an assist on the Bruins' power play marker.

Providence tied the game at the 8:04 mark of period three. Justin Hache would turn back into his own zone only to turn the puck over to Colby Cave, who found David Pastrnak at the side of the net. Pastrnak would feed Griffith across the crease who beat Treutle for his ninth of the season. The Falcons broke the 2-2 tie late in the period as Mauermann found Domenic Monardo wide open in the neutral zone. Monardo, who had a breakaway, fired a quick shot over the shoulder of Subban at 18:12. Cunningham added an empty net goal just over a minute later to seal the Falcons victory. Treutle made 34 saves to improve his record to 6-5-1 on the season, while Subban stopped 24 shots, falling to 6-6-3 on the season.

The Falcons will be on the road next Saturday, December 26, in Syracuse to battle the Crunch. The game will start at 7:00 p.m. and can be heard live on NewsRadio560 WHYN. They return home on Sunday, December 27 to battle the Portland Pirates for Ticket Redemption Night. Any unused ticket can be redeemed for the contest beginning at 5 p.m.
