Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
FORT WAY NE, Ind. - Frank Garces' five shutout innings paired with an early 6-0 lead sent the Fort Wayne TinCaps to a 7-3 win over the Bowling Green Hot Rods on Tuesday night at Parkview Field. After dropping the middle two games of the four-game set, the TinCaps victory secured a split of the series as the two teams met for their final regular season matchup of the year in Fort Wayne.
Garces (9-4) picked up his eighth win in his last nine starts, fanning three and walking three. The Dominican southpaw scattered only three hits against a Bowling Green (27-17, 66-49) team that carried a league-best .271 batting average into the game. Garces has struck out at least three batters in every start since May 24, and has not lost a game since June 6th against West Michigan.
The Fort Wayne (26-18, 57-57) offense battered Hot Rods starter Roberto Gomez (9-3), sending him to his first loss since May 21st, also at Parkview Field. Gomez allowed his first run since July 9th as Yeison Asencio singled home Jace Peterson in the first inning, giving the TinCaps a 1-0 advantage.
That lead ballooned to three runs in the third inning as Peterson singled home a run, and Asencio grounded into a run-scoring double play. The TinCaps tilted the score further with three runs in the fourth inning. Travis Jankowski singled home a run, and Jace Peterson plated both Duanel Jones and Kyle Gaedele, making it 6-0 Fort Wayne. Peterson finished the night with three runs batted in. He leads the team with 29 multi-hit games. Mike Gallic capped the scoring with a solo home run in the seventh inning. It was his first home run since May 19th, when he also homered against the Hot Rods at Parkview Field.
Bowling Green's three runs were scored against Daniel Sarria in the eighth inning. Ryan Brett contributed an RBI double, and Alejandro Segovia hit a two-run home run, which cleared not only the left field fence, but also the construction fence separating Parkview Field from The Harrison.
Travis Jankowski extended his hitting streak to nine consecutive contests, going two-for-four at the plate.
The West Michigan Whitecaps come to town for the start of a three-game series on Wednesday night at 7:05. The scheduled starters are Colin Rea for Fort Wayne and Wilsen Palacios for West Michigan.
