GENEVA, Ill. - Kane County held on to edge the Kernels 5-4 on Monday night at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark. The Kernels had the tying run at 3rd base with nobody out in the 9th inning but were unable to score as the Cougars held on for the victory. A 4-run 6th inning for the Cougars propelled them to the win.

Trailing 5-4 entering the 9th inning, Frazier Hall led off the 9th inning with a double into the left field corner. He was lifted for pinch runner Drew Martinez, who quickly stole 3rd base. With the infield drawn in Cougars reliever Kellen Moen induced a ground out to 3rd base and recorded a strikeout. The final out was a ground out to 2nd base.

The Kernels also had the tying run at 3rd base in the 8th inning. Andy Workman singled, stole 2nd base, and reached 3rd base on a wild pitch, but he was stranded after a fly out and a strikeout. Kellen Moen pitched the 8th and 9th inning for Kane County, notching his 1st save.

Kane County's 4-run 6th inning was the difference in the ballgame. The Cougars plated 4 runs in the inning against Kernels reliever Nick Mutz to take a 5-4 lead. Michael Antonio and Dean Espy drew back to back walks to start the inning. Tim Ferguson's RBI single plated Antonio. Kevin David's 2-RBi triple plated Espy and Ferguson to tie the game. After the triple, Mutz exited the game for Mike Johnson. Johnson's wild pitch allowed David to score, giving the Cougars the one run lead.

The Kernels jumped on Cougars starter Bryan Brickhouse early, plating two runs in the 1st inning. Leadoff batter Zach Borenstein singled to start the game, and Eric Stamets then drove a RBI triple to the right center field wall. The relay throw from Cougars 2nd baseman Justin Trapp was errant and allowed Stamets to score, giving the Kernels the 2-0 lead.

Mitchell then stole 2nd base, and catcher Kevin David's throwing error on the play allowed Workman to score and put Mitchell at 3rd base. Matt Scioscia's RBI single pushed Mitchell across and gave the Kernels a three run cushion.
