Burlington Bees News Release
BURLINGTON, Iowa (8/7/12) - The Burlington Bees (55-58, 23-21) had plenty of hits, but they also allowed several hits in a four-run eighth that allowed the Quad Cities River Bandits (57-56, 22-22) to steal a 6-to-3 win. The Bees have lost three consecutive games and dropped the four-game series with the Bandits.
Leading 3-to-2 entering the top of the eighth, the Bees brought in their stud closer, Jonathan Joseph. In 12 save opportunities this season, Joseph had dominated the opposition and converted in every appearance. But as with any athlete, Joseph was due for a blemish to an otherwise spotless performance as a reliever this season.
The Bandits scored four times in the top of the eighth by stringing together four hits and a walk. They also took advantage of an error and a wild pitch. Besides earning his first blown save and third loss, Joseph (1-3) al- lowed more than one run in a relief appearance for the first time since June 10. In that game, Joseph allowed four runs in four innings to Quad Cities, but took the win in a wild 16-to-15 victory over the Bandits.
The loss wasted a strong effort by the Bees' starter, A.J. Cole. Cole allowed five hits and one earned run in five innings. The right-hander also had five strikeouts.
At the very least, hits weren't hard to come by in game four. After the Bees' anemic effort at the plate in game three, Bees' skipper Aaron Nieckula decided to shake up the lineup. He moved a slugger to the leadoff spot and watched the move provide immediate offense in the first.
Rashun Dixon blasted a leadoff home run on the fifth pitch from Hector Hernandez. Dixon is now tied with Douglas Landaeta with ten home runs, which is the most on the club. Several players had multi-hit games in- cluding Bobby Crocker, Landaeta, Wade Kirkland, and Royce Consigli. Sean Jamieson went 0-for-3, but drove in two runs in the losing effort.
The Bees will try to right the ship with a win on Wednesday against the Peoria Chiefs. Game one of the three games set is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CT at Community Field. Seth Frankoff (4-7) will make a spot start for his eighth start this season.
