Lansing Lugnuts News Release
LANSING, Mich. - The West Michigan Whitecaps received a game-tying RBI single from Aaron Westlake in the ninth and a go-ahead RBI single from Gabriel Purroy in the tenth, handing the Lansing Lugnuts (25-19, 72-41) a bitter 2-1 defeat on Tuesday night on Jackson Field.
Lugnuts closer Ajay Meyer (Loss, 3-3) served up both Whitecaps run-scoring base hits, failing to protect a 1-0 ninth-inning lead for his first blown save since June 27th. It also snapped a streak of eight consecutive converted save opportunities for the All-Star right-hander.
Lansing had taken the lead in the fifth inning thanks to a Nick Baligod (3-for-5) RBI single off Whitecaps starter Jeff Ferrell.
Ferrell, coming off seven perfect innings in his last outing, worked 5 2/3 innings, giving up five hits, walking two and striking out three.
Anthony DeSclafani turned in a great start for the Lugs that spanned six shutout innings. The righty struck out five, walked none, and gave up just four hits. It was his 10th consecutive start of five or more innings and highest strikeout total since June 8th.
Whitecaps reliever Jade Todd (Win, 5-2) tossed two scoreless and hitless innings while striking out five. Melvin Mercedes (Save, 4) recorded the final two outs in the tenth inning.
The Lugnuts dropped three of four against West Michigan and have lost six of their last eight.
The Lugnuts open a three-game series with the Dragons on Wednesday, August 8th at 7:05 p.m., a Ladies Night featuring food and drink specials as well as salon services courtesy of City Salon. Jesse Hernandez (4-5, 2.47) will start for Lansing; Stalin Gerson (6-7, 3.95) will be on the mound for Dayton.
