Clinton LumberKings News Release
Peoria, IL - The LumberKings fell short of a four-game sweep in Peoria on Tuesday night as the Chiefs took the series finale, 5-3, at O'Brien Field.
Peoria starter Starling Peralta was brilliant and improved his record to 4-7 and dropped his second half ERA to 2.62 on the strength of seven innings. Peralta retired the first 17 batters he faced and he racked up a season and career- high 14 strikeouts. Peralta's perfect game was broken up by a solo blast from Anthony Phillips on a 2-0 pitch with two outs in the sixth inning. Peralta struck out the side in the second and seventh inning and notched a pair of K's in the third, fifth and sixth inning.
The Chiefs got on the board in the first inning when Zeke DeVoss led off the inning with a wall-banging double and scored a batter later on Pin-Chieh Chen's sac fly to left. They picked up their second run of the night in the third inning when DeVoss was at it again this time with a double down the left field line and scored on a base hit by catcher Chad Krist. It was in the fifth inning when the same duo picked up the third run for Peoria. DeVoss again doubled down the left field line and scored two batters later on a Krist single. DeVoss finished the night 4 for 4 with four runs scored and fell a homer run shy of the cycle.
Clinton staged another late comeback but fell short this time. Facing a 5-1 deficit, they scored twice in the eighth inning against Bryce Shafer. Larry Suarez came on in relief of Shafer with the bases loaded and two outs and retired Kevin Rivers on a groundout to preserve the lead. Suarez came back out for the ninth inning and retired the LumberKings in order to notch his first save of the year.
The first-place LumberKings return home to Ashford University Field for a short, but very important, three-game series with the Kane County Cougars. Clinton holds a four-game lead over Kane County and Burlington in the race for the second half Western Division crown. In the opener on Wednesday night, the LumberKings send right-hander Seon-Gi Kim (2-3, 5.24) to the mound to face off against Cougars right-hander Aaron Brooks (9-10, 4.61). First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
