Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release

Former Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins forward Tomas Surovy has been named to the Slovakian Olympic Ice Hockey Team, it was announced on Thursday. The opening ceremonies for the Torino Games get underway Friday night, while the men's ice hockey competition schedule starts on Wednesday, February 15.

The 24-year old Surovy had previously been named to Slovakia's taxi squad, but was promoted to the 23-man active roster after Ladislav Nagy was ruled out with a knee injury. He is the second member of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins to be named to an Olympic team, following in the footsteps of Konstantin Koltsov, who suited up for Belarus at the 2002 Salt Lake City Games.

The Pittsburgh Penguins fifth round choice (120th overall) in the 2001 Entry Draft began this season with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, registering 28 points (16+12) and a plus-11 rating in 25 games with the AHL club. He was recalled by Pittsburgh on December 11, and has recorded 18 points (9+9) in 28 games with the NHL Penguins.

Surovy is the second-leading scorer in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins history with 178 points (89+89) in 238 career games with the team. He ranks second on the team's all-time list in goals, fifth in assists, eighth in games played, third in power play goals (27) and first in game-winning goals (14).
