Pawtucket, RI - The Syracuse Chiefs lost a close battle with the Pawtucket Red Sox, 5-3, in ten innings on Sunday afternoon at McCoy Stadium. Former Chief Adam Lind hit a walk-off two-run home run in the tenth inning to lift the PawSox to a series win. Yadiel Hernandez racked up three hits, including a home run for the Chiefs in the game.
Syracuse (38-54) scored a run in the top of the tenth inning. With the game tied, 2-2, Tuffy Gosewisch began the tenth on second base, per new extra-innings rules implemented this season. Gosewisch moved to third base on a Bengie Gonzalez sacrifice bunt. Matt Reynolds followed with a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Gosewisch to put Syracuse up, 3-2.
Pawtucket (44-47) won the game in the bottom of the tenth. Jonathan Ortega began the frame at second base as a pinch runner for Dan Butler. Aneury Tavarez led off with a sacrifice bunt that moved Ortega to third. Tony Renda followed with a single that scored Ortega to tie the game, 3-3. Lind then followed with a two-run home run over the right-field fence that gave the Red Sox a 5-3 win.
The Chiefs got on the board first in the game in the top of the third inning. With one out, Reynolds singled. Andrew Stevenson then grounded into a fielder's choice where Reynolds was out at second base, but Stevenson was safe at first. Adrian Sanchez followed with a double to left field that scored Stevenson for a 1-0 Chiefs lead.
Syracuse added a run in the top of the sixth. With one out and nobody on base, Hernandez smashed a home run over the left-field wall to give the Chiefs a 2-0 edge. Hernandez's eighth home run of the season marked his fourth at McCoy Stadium.
The Red Sox scored an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth. With two outs, Tavarez hit a ground ball to third. Sanchez made a marvelous stop to get to the ball, but his throw was wide of first, allowing Tavarez to reach third on the single and two-base throwing error. Tavarez then scored on a Renda single to left field, trimming the Syracuse lead to one, 2-1.
Pawtucket tied the game in the seventh. With one out, Ivan De Jesus Jr. singled. After Kyle Wren flied out, Jantzen Witte singled to put runners at first and second. Cole Sturgeon followed with a single to left field that brought home De Jesus Jr., knotting the game, 2-2.
Chiefs starting pitcher John Simms was strong on the mound for the Chiefs. The right-hander allowed just four hits and an unearned run in five and two-thirds innings of work with five strikeouts and no walks.
Syracuse returns home to begin a weeklong homestand on Monday night. The Chiefs host the Durham Bulls at NBT Bank Stadium for the first game of a three-game series against the Bulls. RHP Brady Dragmire will be on the mound for Syracuse opposite of RHP Forrest Snow for Durham. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m.
