LAST TIME OUT: THE Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders defeated the Rochester Red Wings 4-0 on Saturday night at PNC Field. The triumph was the sixth shutout victory of the season for the RailRiders.

The RailRiders got on the board in the bottom of the second, when Mike Ford drove a Kohl Stewart fastball out to left field for a solo home run. The opposite-field blast was Ford's ninth of the season, and handed the Baby Bombers a 1-0 lead. Erik Swanson was strong in his first outing back from a groin strain which landed him on the disabled list in mid-June. He allowed only two hits in 4.2 innings of work, striking out three and not walking a batter. The right-hander also retired 11 of the final 12 batters he faced.

J.P. Feyereisen recorded the final out of the fifth for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, and worked around a leadoff double from Jordan Pacheco in the top of the sixth to keep the Rochester offense off the board. Rochester couldn't muster much offense against Joe Harvey in the seventh or eighth innings, getting one baserunner in each frame but failing to score. The right-hander struck out three and picked a runner off base in his appearance.

In the bottom of the eighth, the RailRiders tacked on some insurance against Red Wings reliever Tyler Duffy. Mike Ford was hit by a pitch on the foot to lead off the frame, and was replaced by L.J. Mazzilli. Ryan McBroom followed with a single to chase Mazzilli to third, then Abiatal Avelino tripled to plate both runners. Rey Navarro added an RBI single to plate Avelino and extend the SWB lead to 4-0.

Cody Carroll walked a pair of batters in the top of the ninth to put the tying run in the on-deck circle. He settled down and struck out Jon Kemmer to strand the runners and close out the victory.

Avelino starred offensively for the RailRiders, finishing 3-for-4 with a triple, a run scored and two RBIs. As a team the RailRiders tallied 11 hits, with Brandon Drury and McBroom registering two hits apiece.

...AND JUSTUS FOR ALL: LHP Justus Sheffield got the final start before the All-Star Break for the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders and went 5.1 IP, 5 H, R/ER, 7 K. It might be a while before he pitches for the RailRiders again because Sheffield was selected to participate in the 2018 SiriusXM Futures Game Sunday at Nationals Park in Washington D.C. Baseball America ranked Sheffield as the, trailing only INF Gleyber Torres and OF Estevan Florial. In 15G/14GS, the southpaw is 3-5 with a 2.49 ERA and 88 K (10.0 K/9), 36 BB (2.4 K:BB) over 79.1 IP between Double-A Trenton and Triple-A SWB. Sheffield is the first RailRiders player to be tabbed for the Futures Game since OF Aaron Judge was selected to Team USA in 2015. The lone Yankees representative last season was RHP Domingo Acevedo who allowed 3R/3ER on 4H in his one inning of work for the World Team.

PITCHING STAYS HOT: The RailRiders pitching staff had turned a corner since the calendar flipped to July. In the first 9G in July, the staff had thrown 80.0 innings and allowed 25R/16ER for a 1.80 ERA. The team entered July with a 3.94 staff ERA and has lowered it to 3.73 despite Friday's performance where they allowed 9R on 16H to the Red Wings. Saturday's 4-0 shutout win was the team's 6th shutout win of the season, and the first since a 7-inning shutout in Game 2 of a doubleheader June 12 vs. Rochester. It was the first nine-inning shutout since June 1 @ Indianapolis, 37 games prior.

ROLLING INTO THE BREAK: Over the last 30G the RailRiders have own a 20-10 record to bring them up to 2nd place in the International League North standings. The RailRiders are 7-0-2 in their last nine series and won 6-of-7 games leading into the All-Star Break before dropping the first two games of their series against Rochester. If SWB isn't able to win Sunday against the Red Wings it will be the first series they lose since dropping 2-of-3 games June 5-7 against the Durham Bulls.

WINGING IT: The RailRiders continue to get a strong performance out of its bullpen over the last two weeks. In 22G since June 17, the bullpen arms (not named RHP A.J. Cole) have combined for 80.1 IP, 48 H (5.4 H/9), 21R/16ER (1.79 ERA).
