Five run fifth gives Whitecaps large lead; Suspended game to be resumed Sunday

West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
MIDLAND - Following a five run top of the fifth, the second game of a double header was suspended due to lightning and rain with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning, with the Whitecaps leading Great Lakes, 7-0.
Play will resume at 3:05 p.m. Sunday and will be followed by a nine inning regularly scheduled game. The other game that had been slated as part of a double header on Sunday has been cancelled and will not be made up because the Loons and Whitecaps do not play each other again in the first half after Sunday.
Paul Nardozzi pitched 4.1 shutout innings for the Whitecaps before play was stopped due to lightning with one out in the bottom of the fifth inning. Because he did not pitch the required five innings as a starter, Nardozzi will not be eligible to earn a victory.
In his first game as a Whitecap, Hayden Parrott singled in his first at bat to lead off the third inning. He later scored on a single by Angel Flores to put West Michigan in front, 1-0.
Audy Ciriaco is 2-for-3 in the game with a solo home run to lead off the fourth to make the lead 2-0 and an RBI single in the fifth to give the Whitecaps a 3-0 advantage.
Later in the fifth, Jordan Newton drove in two runs on his seventh triple of the season.
The Whitecaps sent eleven to the plate in the top of the fifth against Loons reliever Jon Dutton who threw 48 pitches. Dutton walked four batters and allowed four hits in the inning.
LHP Mauricio Robles is expected to pitch for West Michigan when play resumes while LHP Wilfredo Diaz will likely throw the remainder of the game for the Loons.
