Bees Lose Third In A Row To Kernals
June 7, 2008 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Burlington Bees News Release
Cedar Rapids, IA - The Burlington Bees have lost the first three games of a series at Cedar Rapids after a 5-1 loss Saturday night. The Bees were down 1-0 going into the bottom of the eighth but a four-run inning gave Cedar Rapids some breathing room and eventually a victory.
Alex Caldera got the start for the Bees and was very good. His only blemish was one run that he allowed in the second inning when Jeremy Moore led the inning off with a triple and scored on a Julio Perez sacrifice fly. Caldera ended up pitching five innings allowing the one run on three hits with seven strikeouts and one walk. He was tagged with the loss to move to 3-5 on the season.
The Kernels scored four runs in the eighth inning, which featured some controversy. Chris Chavez got into trouble allowing the bases loaded but was very close to getting out of the inning when Perez was called safe at third base on a very close play. Consecutive base hits then gave the Kernals four runs. Chavez was also ejected during the inning after arguing with an umpire.
The Bees did score one run in the ninth inning. Kyle Marting hit a single with Jason Taylor on second but that was all the Bees could put on the board.
Martin was the only Bee with more than one hit as he had two. Taylor went 1-1 with three walks. Henry Arias, Zach Peterson and Burke Baldwin combined to pitch 2.1 innings of scoreless baseball.
The Bees and Kernals wrap up the series Sunday afternoon at Dale and Thomas Popcorn Field. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00. Sam Runion is the scheduled starter for the Bees. The Game can be heard on 1490 KBUR and online at www.GoBees.com. The Bees return home to Community Field for their final home series before the All-Star break on June 9th as they will begin a four-game series against Wisconsin.
