Dayton Dragons News Release
Dayton, Ohio-Evan Frey collected two hits and scored three runs and three South Bend pitchers combined to scatter eight hits as the Silver Hawks edged the Dayton Dragons 3-2 on Saturday night. The loss dropped the Dragons to 26-34 on the season.
South Bend held off a Dragons comeback bid in the late innings of the game. Trailing 3-1 in the seventh, Dayton's Justin Reed drilled an opposite field solo home run to pull the Dragons to within one at 3-2. The homer was Reed's sixth of the season. The next batter, Zack Cozart belted a drive high off the left-center field fence that missed by less than a foot of tying the game. Cozart raced around to third with one out, but South Bend reliever Billy Spottiswood struck out Brandon Waring and got Devin Mesoraco to pop to second to end the threat.
In the eighth, the Dragons again threatened to tie the game. Michael McKennon started the inning by drawing a walk and went to second on a sacrifice by Anthony Gressick. Logan Parker lined a single to left that moved McKennon to third. But Spottiswood struck out Kevyn Feiner and got Keltavious Jones to fly out to center and end the inning. The Dragons were retired in order in the ninth to end the game.
South Bend scored in the top of the first inning to take an early lead against Dragons starting pitcher Curtis Partch (2-8). The Dragons answered with a run in the bottom of the first when Cozart tripled and scored on Mesoraco's single to center.
But South Bend added single runs in the third and fifth innings to build the lead.
Partch went four and two-thirds innings, allowing six hits and three earned runs with two walks three strikeouts to suffer the loss.
Cozart tied a Dragons club record with two triples in the game. No other Dragons player had more than one hit.
It was a frustrating night offensively for the Dragons as they stranded 10 runners and in three different innings, had a runner at third with less than two outs but could not drive him in. The Dragons left men at third base in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings.
The Dragons host South Bend on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. (WING 1410 AM) in the final game of the homestand. Jamie Arneson (0-2, 8.10) gets the start for Dayton.
