Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
The Cedar Rapids Kernels extended their current winning streak to a season-high four games with a 5-1 over the Burlington Bees in front of 3,873 fans on Saturday night at Dale and Thomas Popcorn Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Kernels starter Trevor Reckling (3-2) scattered five hits over eight scoreless innings, walking three and striking out five for the win. Reckling forced the Bees into 14 groundouts on a night when the wind was blowing briskly out to center field and only allowed three fly outs over his eight innings.
The Kernels scored first on a triple by Jeremy Moore and a sac fly by Julio Perez in the second inning. The game remained 1-0 until the bottom of the eighth when the Kernels used 2 runs singles by Hector Estrella and Efren Navarro to take a 5-0 lead.
Perez finished the game 1 for 2 with a double to go along with his sac fly RBI. Andrew Romine, Tyler Johnson and Jerry Gonzalez each had a single as the Kernels had seven hits in the game.
Burlington starter Alex Caldera (3-5) allowed a run on three hits and struck out seven in five innings. Kyle Martin was 2 for 4 and drove in the Bees only run in the top of the ninth off Kernel reliever Ryan Brasier.
The final home game in the first half for the Kernels is Sunday afternoon at 2 pm. The first 1,000 fans through the gates when they open at 1 pm receive a free Kernels baseball hat from the Best Western Longbranch. It's also a KDAT Sunday Family Fun Day where fans can get autographs from the Kernels before the game, play Travel Advisors Baseball Bingo during the game and run the bases and play catch in the outfield after the game, thanks to Steak N Shake.
