Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
KALAMAZOO, MI - The Frontier League today announced the first 21 choices for the All-Star teams representing the East and West Divisions at Wuerfel Park on July 16. The Beach Bums tied for the most representatives on the East Division squad with five selections.
Highlighting the picks was a unanimous choice in RHP David Nathanson who is in his second season with the Beach Bums. Nathanson currently leads the league with seven wins. He takes a 7-1 record to go with a 2.24 ERA into his start on Friday night. The 2.24 ERA is the second lowest in the league. Nathanson also ranks third in innings pitched with 56.1. LHP Ryan Gehring was also chosen to the East Division pitching staff. Gehring will start the second game of today's doubleheader and brings a 3-3 record with a 3.42 ERA into the contest. He has two complete game shutouts to lead the league.
The three other Beach Bums All-Stars came from the outfield where Mike Goetz, Mike Epping, and Jake Whitesides were selected. Goetz is the leading hitter in the Frontier League at .377. He is second in the league in hits with 60 and ranks third in on base percentage at .465. Mike Epping is tied for the league lead in stolen bases with 20 and is currently hitting .312 with five homers and 28 RBI. Jake Whitesides is the everyday designated hitter but was chosen as an outfielder. He currently leads the league in RBI with 40 and is hitting .292 with a team best six homers.
The squads were chosen by members of each team's media, coaching staffs, and broadcasters. Three more All-Stars will be selected on July 7th as the manager of each team rounds out the squad. Traverse City had just two All-Stars in 2007.
The Beach Bums (22-18) trail the Kalamazoo Kings by two games entering tonight's doubleheader. RHP Bryan Cryer (0-0, 6.75) will make his second professional start for the Beach Bums opposite LHP Trent Lare (3-2, 4.68) for the Kings in the opener with Ryan Gehring (3-3, 3.42) going for the Beach Bums in the night cap against Kalamazoo's RHP Jeff Long (4-1, 4.59).
