Sauget, IL - River City was able to manage a split of two games on a damp Thursday night at GCS Ballpark, losing the first game 9-5, but taking the second game 4-1 in seven innings.

The Gateway Grizzlies took a 5-0 lead into the bottom of the fourth inning at the start of game one, after Wednesday night's game was suspended to Thursday.

River City was able to scratch out four runs from the fifth to eighth innings to cut the lead to one. Andrew Sweet double home a run in the fifth and Chris Raniere knocked in another in the same inning. Ryan Wehrle drove in a run with a ground ball in the sixth. Luke Bargainer scored in the eighth on a Jeff Miller double.

The Grizzlies though put it away in the bottom of the eighth off Dustin Corbett and Gary Lee. Corbett, who had a sold four innings of scoreless relief from the fourth through seventh, saw the first two single off him to start the eighth, the bases were loaded one out later on a hit-by-pitch. After a sacrifice fly to center put the Grizzlies on top 6-4, Lee came in and gave up a three run home run to Robbie Minor.

Erik Dessau (3-4) picked up his first win against the Rascals in three tries, going six innings and allowing three runs. Adam Tollefson (3-1) dropped his first loss of the season going three innings and allowing five runs, all earned, on seven hits.

In game two, the Rascals jumped on starter Demetri White with three runs in the first. A.J. Van Slyke grounded out for an RBI. Charlie Lisk would later commit a throwing error to allow the second run to score, and Wehrle singled in a run to make it 3-0.

Jonathan Miller went 4.1 innings in the start for the Rascals. He was lifted in the fifth after he allowed the only Grizzlie run in the fourth on a two out single from Michael Campbell. In the fifth, Miller walked Lisk with one out to bring the tying run to the plate. Rascals Manager Toby Rumfield then went to the left hander Mike Castrignano to face Stephen Holdren. Castrignano forced a soft line drive to short, which Lisk failed to stop on, allowing an easy double play to be turned at first.

The Rascals added a seventh inning run without a hit when Coby Mavroulis hit Van Slyke. After a balk and a stolen base, Van Slyke scored on Lisk's second throwing error of the game when he tried to throw behind the runner, instead sailing it into the outfield.

Mike Benacka picked up his tenth save tossing a scoreless seventh. Castrignano (2-3) got the win going .2 innings. White (0-1) suffered the loss going five innings and allowing three earned.

River City (21-21) now travels to Southern Illinois to the take on the Miners for three starting Friday night at 7:05 p.m. Fans can catch the Rascals on the road all season by tuning into FM 104.5 KSLQ.
