AA Winnipeg Goldeyes

Fish Manage Just One Run as Saltdogs Even Series

July 17, 2012 - American Association (AA)
Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

On a sweltering night in Nebraska, the Winnipeg Goldeyes bats just wouldn't heat up.

Lincoln's Stephen Holdren drove home the eventual winning run in the sixth inning as the hometown Saltdogs beat the Winnipeg Goldeyes 2-1 in Lincoln Tuesday night.

With the loss, the Goldeyes fell to 33-23 on the season and fell two games behind the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks in the race for first in the American Association's North Division. The RedHawks beat Sioux Falls 9-3 last night and have now won 14 straight games.

A single by Winnipeg's Jose Duran in the fourth inning drove home Luis Alen with the first run of the game, but as it turned out, it was the only run for the Goldeyes who squandered another great start by right-hander Matt Rusch.

Rusch went five and a third innings and allowed only two runs on six hits, but while the Fish had a total of eight hits on the night, they simply couldn't get a big one with men on base.

Rusch, meanwhile, threw 99 pitches over five and a third so pitching coach Bill Pulsipher and manager Rick Forney decided their starter had had enough work in what was 37 degree C heat. Zach Baldwin and Kaohi Downing pitched two and two thirds solid innings of scoreless relief.

Asif Shah, who was a Goldeye for a few months in the off-season, homered in the fifth inning to tie the game at 1-1 and then Holdren, who went three-for-four on the night, delivered the winning RBI in the sixth.

Rusch (5-2, 2.58 ERA) suffered the loss for the Goldeyes, who played without the injured Jon Weber. Justin Edwards (3-4, 5.53 ERA) got the win while P.J. Zocchi (5.64 ERA) picked up his 13th save.

The Goldeyes and SaltDogs will play the final game of this three-game series Wednesday night in Lincoln. The Goldeyes don't return home until next Tuesday, July 24, when the Quebec Capitales visit Shaw Park.

Game time in Lincoln on Tuesday is 7 p.m. and it can be heard live on TSN 1290 with Paul Edmonds calling the play-by-play.
