Saints Ground AirHogs with Six Run Fifth, Win 9-3

ST. PAUL, MN (July 17, 2012) - The St. Paul Saints have watched a number of teams in the American Association roll off large winning streaks this season and they are trying to start one of their own. They won for the fourth straight time capitalizing on Grand Prairie miscues with a big six run fifth inning en route to a 9-3 victory on Tuesday night at Midway Stadium in front of 4,807.

With the Saints trailing 3-1 going into the bottom of the fifth they sent nine men to the plate and took advantage of an error to start the inning. Tanner Townsend laid down a bunt to the third base side which pitcher Josh Strawn picked up and threw away at first allowing Tanner to reach third on a three base error. His brother Jon Townsend followed with an RBI double to straight away center cutting the deficit to 3-2. Benji Johnson then laid down a sacrifice bunt, but once again Strawn made a mistake and tried to throw out Jon at third. His throw was high and the Saints had runners at the corners and nobody out. Joe Spiers, playing in his first game with the Saints since being acquired via trade with the Lincoln Saltdogs, singled home Jon Townsend to tie the game at three. Spiers finished the night 3-5 with an RBI, a run scored and a stolen base. Jose Hernandez loaded the bases with a single. Willie Cabrera gave the Saints a 4-3 lead with a fielder's choice ground out that erased Spiers at third. With runners at first and third and two outs, Strawn unleashed a wild pitch that allowed Hernandez to score and give the Saints a 5-3 lead. Ronnie Bourquin finished the scoring with a two-run homer to right, his seventh of the season, to give the Saints a 7-3 lead.

Saints starter Robert Coe once again was tremendous in picking up his team leading seventh victory. He struggled in the first giving up five hits and two runs, on RBI singles by Brian Myrow and Trent Lockwood. Myrow extended his streak of reaching base safely in consecutive games to 45. Coe would allow an RBI single to Lockwood in the fifth, but he went 7.2 innings allowing three runs, while scattering 11 hits, while walking two and striking out four.

The same two teams meet in the finale of the three game series on Wednesday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. The Saints will send RHP Luke Anderson (0-0, 3.18) to the mound against AirHogs RHP Will Irvin (1-0, 5.79). It is a Tribute to Ferris Bueller's Day Off. The game can be heard on Club 1220 KLBB and on 87.9 FM in the ballpark.
