Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

The Winnipeg Goldeyes took full advantage of a depleted Wichita Wingnuts lineup Friday night.

Winnipeg (25-15) smacked three home runs in a 9-1 thumping of the American Association-leading Wingnuts (30-10) to open a three-game series before 4,024 fans at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium in Kansas.

The win is Winnipeg's fourth in a row after sweeping the Sioux City Explorers earlier this week and guarantees that the Goldeyes will return home next week for an 11-game homestand in first place in the North Division.

The Goldeyes scored four times in the second inning thanks to a two-run double from Kyle Day, a groundout from David Narodowski that scored Josh Mazzola and a Dan Barbero single, which scored Day.

One inning later, Luis Alen hit a two-run home run to give Winnipeg a 6-0 lead.

The Goldeyes capped their scoring in the fourth inning when Day hit a solo home run and Chris Roberson stroked a two-run shot, which was Roberson's third dinger in his last two games and sixth in his last 11 games.

As a team, Winnipeg has now hit seven home runs in its last two games.

Wichita scored its only run in the bottom of fourth and looked like a shell of the team that entered the game with a 30-9 record. The Wingnuts lost infielders Jake Kahaulelio and C.J. Ziegler, who were both hitting more than .330, to Tabasco of the Mexican League yesterday, while third baseman Juan Richardson is out for the season after having to undergo shoulder surgery.

At the dish, Alen led the Goldeyes with three hits, while Day had a team-best three RBI.

Ace Walker allowed just a home run to John Rodriguez in eight innings of work for his fourth win of the season. Stephen Kahn struck out three Wingnuts with two runners on base in the ninth to close out the game.

In his first professional start, Shawn Lewick takes the loss for Wichita after allowing all nine Goldeyes runs in five innings of work.

The Goldeyes can claim their second consecutive series with a win tomorrow night. Matt Rusch (5-1, 1.88) will take the ball for Winnipeg, while Wichita will go with lefty Jeff Nadeau (0-0, 3.44), who will make his first start of the season.

Coverage on TSN 1290 with Paul Edmonds begins with Around the Association at 5:30 p.m. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
