Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
SIOUX FALLS - The men who man the hot corner require power at the plate, the quickest reflexes in the field and a rocket arm to throw across the diamond.
The Sioux Falls Canaries/Pheasants have had plenty of exceptional third basemen. Four have been identified as nominees for the Sioux Falls 20th-Anniversary Team, and it's up to fans to decide who makes the team. Fans can vote once a day through July 4 on the Pheasants website, www.sfpheasants.com.
Fans can select their top choice from these candidates:
Tagg Bozied (2001) - Bozied is a Sioux Falls native and launched his professional career in Sioux Falls. He was drafted by the San Diego Padres in the 3rd round of the 2001 draft, but he opted instead to play in his hometown. He joined the Canaries midseason 2001 and posted a .307 average with six home runs and 31 RBI. The San Diego Padres signed Bozied for 2002, and he played affiliated minor league baseball every year - including more than 600 games at the Triple-A level - until his retirement in 2012.
Trevor Lawhorn (2007, 2009- ) - Lawhorn has played 331 games in Sioux Falls, the most in team history. No player has manned the hot corner more than Lawhorn, and he is the career leader in several defensive categories. At the plate, Lawhorn has hit .284 with 39 home runs and 184 RBI. His 73 career doubles ranks second in team history, and he is third all-time with 361 hits. In 2009 and 2010, Lawhorn was an American Association All-Star.
Grant Richardson (2008) - Richardson played all but five games of the 2008 championship season at third base. He earned all-star honors for batting .322 with 16 home runs and 71 RBI. Patience at the plate helped him reach base at a .435 clip, the third highest season mark in team history. He scored 88 runs, then a team and league record.
John Tsoukalas (1997) - Tsoukalas was the only position player from Sioux Falls' 1997 lineup named a postseason all-star. He played 80 of 81 games at third base, hitting an even .300 with two home runs and 34 RBI. He reached base at a .380 clip.
The results will be announced on Thursday, July 5. Nominees were determined by a select group of organization members and Sioux Falls media personnel who have long observed the club.
The 20th-Anniversary Team will consist of two starting pitchers, two relief pitchers, one catcher, a representative from each infield position, three outfielders and a designated hitter. In addition, fans can vote for a manager.
More nominees and voting will occur throughout the season.
The Sioux Falls Pheasants are in their 20th season of independent professional baseball. Information about season tickets and group outings is available by calling (605) 336-6060 or visiting www.sfpheasants.com.
