Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
SIOUX FALLS - Sioux Falls Pheasants fans have voted Joe Anthonsen as the 20th Anniversary Team's all-time second baseman. The Pheasants made the announcement on Thursday prior to the first pitch against El Paso.
In celebration of the franchise's 20th season, fans are determining the top players in history through online voting at the team's website, www.sfpheasants.com.
Anthonsen is the first player that is active on the Pheasants' current roster voted to the team. He gathered an overwhelming 80 percent of the vote, well ahead of Michael Dumas (1996-1997) and Josh Patton (2008).
Anthonsen (2009-) provided an offensive spark for three consecutive years as the team's leadoff hitter. In his first two seasons, he collected 116 and 125 hits respectively with on-base percentages above .400. Anthonsen ranks fifth all-time with 354 hits and holds a career .288 batting average. He is the career leader for walks with 203. With more games played at second base than any other infielder in team history, he is also career leader in nearly every defensive category.
Nominees were determined by a select group of organization members and Sioux Falls media personnel who have long observed the club.
The 20th-Anniversary Team will consist of two starting pitchers, two relief pitchers, one catcher, a representative from each infield position, three outfielders and a designated hitter. In addition, fans can vote for a manager.
More nominees and voting will occur throughout the season.
The Sioux Falls Pheasants are in their 20th season of independent professional baseball. Information about season tickets and group outings is available by calling (605) 336-6060 or visiting www.sfpheasants.com.
