Fish Distribute Year-End Awards

The Winnipeg Goldeyes handed out three year-end awards prior to and during tonight's final game of the regular season against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks.

University of Winnipeg Tear the Cover Off the Ball Trophy Outfielder/infielder Ryan Scoma won the University of Winnipeg Tear the Cover Off the Ball Trophy, as the team's leading hitter. Scoma is hitting .343 this season, which is the third-best batting average in the American Association. In 80 games with the Goldeyes this season, Scoma has hit four home runs and driven in 46 runs.

Budweiser Most Valuable Player For the second consecutive season, shortstop Josh Mazzola was named the Winnipeg Goldeyes Budweiser Player of the Year, as selected by the media that cover the team. Mazzola has appeared in all 99 games with the Goldeyes this season. He's hitting .293 with a team-leading 16 home runs and 64 RBI. Primarily a corner infielder and outfielder, Mazzola switched to shortstop midway through the season and made 50 starts there.

Rogers Player of the Year For the third time in the last four years, catcher Luis Alen was selected as the Rogers Player of the Year, as voted upon by the fans. Alen has started 91 games behind the plate for the Goldeyes and threw out 21 per cent of opposing base stealers. At the plate, Alen is hitting .310 with five home runs and five RBI.
