Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

FARGO, N.D. - In the midst of a stretch of 12 games that will dictate what the Winnipeg Goldeyes will be facing in the second half of their first season in the American Association, the Goldeyes started the first of four games against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks in very fine fashion.

Chris Salamida tossed seven scoreless innings to lead the Goldeyes (30-20) in a 4-0 shutout of the RedHawks (24-27) Thursday night at Newman Outdoor Field before 3,468 spectators.

"I was locating everything - fastball, curveball and changeup," Salamida said. "I didn't throw too many changeups, but my fastball and curveball were top notch and hitting the corners all night."

Winnipeg scored twice in each of the second and sixth innings. Brian Joynt hit a two-run single in the second inning, while Justin Bass singled in Jon Weber and a Price Kendall sac fly scored Luis Alen in the sixth inning.

In getting the win, Salamida allowed six hits over seven innings - he allowed two hits to start the eighth inning before being relieved by Chad Benefield - and struck out seven, while walking one. Fargo ace Jake Laber takes the loss after allowing four runs over five innings. He also walked six Goldeyes and struck out two.

Despite getting the win, the Goldeyes don't gain any ground on the St. Paul Saints for first place in the North Division, as the Saints beat the Gary SouthShore RailCats Thursday night. However, Winnipeg does move 6.5 games up on Fargo for second place on the division.

Winnipeg improved its record to 3-2 through five games of 12 straight against either St. Paul or Fargo with the win.

The Goldeyes and RedHawks meet again Friday night in Fargo in the second game of the four-game set. Game time is 7:02 p.m. and all the action can be heard live on Sports Radio 1290, beginning with the pre-game show at 6:30 p.m.
