Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release

FT. WORTH, Tx.---Ft. Worth Cats starter Wade Mackey (5-2) threw his second complete game of the year, holding the Captains to two runs on six hits as Shreveport-Bossier lost the second game of their four-game series with Ft. Worth 12-2 at La Grave Field Thursday night.

Andres Rodriguez was the only Captains hitter with two hits, going 2-for-4 with an RBI. Rodriguez is hitting .500 (14-28) over his last six games. However, the rest of the Shreveport-Bossier bats went quietly as Mackey became the first hurler to throw a complete game against the Captains this year.

Shreveport-Bossier took an early lead when Robert Perry doubled in the top of the first and scored on Bryan Sabatella's base hit. But with two on and one out, Palmer Karr Jr. hit into a 5-4-3 double play to take the Captains out of a potential multi-run inning.

The Cats would take the lead in the second on back-to-back solo home runs for Trent Lockwood and Brian Fryer off Captains starter Aaron Cunningham (2-6). Fryer's home run was the Cats' fourth in the series and his second.

Ft. Worth extended the lead in the third. Leadoff hitter Aljay Davis reached on an error to the shortstop Uriak Marquez. Then right fielder Marcos Rodriguez was hit by a Cunningham pitch and catcher Kelley Gulledge reached on a dropped fly ball by Captains right fielder Sabatella. With the bases loaded, designated hitter John Allen would single to score one run and Lockwood singled to score the next two. Cunningham would retire the last three batters of the inning but Ft. Worth took the 5-1 lead.

Gulledge's RBI double in the fourth followed by Allen's single to score him made it 7-1. The Cats added another in the fifth on a Davis sacrifice fly.

Captains left fielder Alex Cowart led off the sixth with a single and scored on Andres Rodriguez's base hit to make it 8-2 but that was as close as Shreveport-Bossier would get. Ft. Worth scored four times in the seventh of reliever Jameson Maj to go up 12-2. Mackey retired the Captains in order in the ninth to finish his nine-inning effort.

Cunningham lasted four innings, his shortest outing of the year. He gave up eight runs (six earned) on nine hits while walking one and striking out one. Lee Henry pitched two scoreless innings for the Captains, though one of the runners he inherited when he replaced Cunningham with two on in the fourth would score. Jake McCarter pitched a 1-2-3 eighth.

Eight of Ft. Worth's nine starters had hits and scored runs in the ball game. Marcos Rodriguez went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, three runs and a stolen base. Gulledge was 2-for-5 with an RBI and two runs. First baseman Lockwood was 3-for-5 with a home run, double and three RBIs. Fryer went 2-for-5 with a homer and two runs scored. Shreveport Bossier is now 1-4 on their 11-game road trip and have allowed 12 or more runs in all four of their loses.

The Captains fall to 27-25 on the year and into third place in the American Association South, 7.5 games behind Grand Prairie and .5 games behind the Amarillo Sox, who defeated Grand Prairie to take second place in the division Thursday night. Friday, July 8 the Captains throw Richard Salazar (4-2, 4.70) to the mound against Ft. Worth's Phillip Bartleski (0-0, 2.31). First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.
