Spokane Indians News Release

Spokane, WA -The Texas Rangers announced today that they have assigned their first-round pick, left-handed pitcher Kevin Matthews (1st round, 33rd overall), to the Spokane Indians. Matthews is slated to get the start in tomorrow's series finale against the Yakima Bears.

Matthews, a 5'11" lefty from Richmond Hills High School in Georgia, enjoyed a stellar senior season, posting a 4-2 record with a 1.68 ERA and 94 strikeouts in just 41 2/3 innings. Matthews performance earned him All-Greater Savannah honors for the second consecutive year.

After signing with the Rangers on June 17th, Matthews began the year in Arizona, making seven appearances for the AZL Rangers and striking out 12 batters in 12 innings pitched.

A short but hard-throwing left-hander, Matthews draws comparisons to former Rangers draft picks Robbie Erlin and Robbie Ross.
