Cleveland Barons News Release
CLEVELAND - San Jose Sharks Executive Vice President and General Manager Doug Wilson announced today that the club has reassigned left wing Milan Michalek to the Cleveland Barons. Michalek was selected by San Jose in the first round (sixth overall) of the 2003 NHL Entry Draft.
Michalek appeared in two games with the Sharks this season. In his first NHL game, Michalek scored his first NHL goal. During the second contest, Michalek injured his knee and was placed on injured reserved. Michalek is one of three 1st round draft choices on the Barons roster. Brad Boyes (2000, 24th) and Marcel Goc (2001, 20th) were also 1st round selections.
Michalek, 19, scored eight points (3 goals, 5 assists) and 14 penalty minutes in 46 games with Budejovice in 2002-03. In addition, the six-foot-two, 205-pound forward scored one goal and two penalty minutes in four postseason games. In 2001-02, the native of Jindrichuv Hradec in the Czech Republic posted 17 points (6 goals, 11 assists) in 47 games with Budejovice. A member of the Czech Republic's national team at the 2002-03 World Junior Championships held in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Michalek posted four points (2 goals, 2 assists) in six tournament games.
Ranked by NHL Central Scouting as the second overall European skater in both their mid-term and final rankings, Michalek is described as a good skater with an extremely high skill level. He is also known as a talented player with great moves, in addition to being a creative playmaker with good passing skills.
Michalek will join the Barons as they host the defending AHL Calder Cup Champion Houston Aeros on Friday at 7:00pm. The Barons are hosting "Indians On Ice" as several Cleveland Indians from the Winter Development Program will take part in the night's festivities. In addition, the first 3,000 fans in attendance will receive a Patrick Rissmiller Bobblehead Doll featuring realistic hair.
Barons tickets can be purchased at all TicketMaster Outlets, the Gund Arena Box Office, and charge-by-phone by calling 216-241-5555. More information about the Barons is available by calling 216-420-0000 or by Crashing The Net at www.clevelandbarons.net.
