Carolina Mudcats News Release
ZEBULON, N.C. - Reliever Chase Costello pitched through a career-high five and 2/3 innings and allowed just one run, but the Carolina Mudcats matched a season-high with four errors and allowed four unearned runs in a 7-1 loss to the Delmarva Shorebirds on Friday night at Five County Stadium. The loss snapped the first-place Mudcats' winning streak at six straight games.
The Shorebirds (16-23, 44-60) initially led 1-0 after the first before scoring five times in the second to take an early 6-0 lead. Starter Will Rudy allowed all six early runs, but only two were earned as the Mudcats (26-14, 59-44) committed two early errors behind him. Their most significant of those early errors came in the second when Jadher Areinamo missed a throw to second on a potential inning-ended double play. Rudy (L, 5-3) ended up walking in a run and allowed two, two-out run-scoring hits shortly after the botched double play.
Enrique Bradfield Jr. walked, stole two bases and scored the game's first run in the first when Tavian Jorgenson reached on a fielder's choice. Bradfield also walked with the bases loaded to force in a run in the second to lift the Shorebirds to an early 2-0 lead. Rudy followed that walk with a fly out, but Tavian Josenberger and Matthew Etzel answered with back-to-back run-scoring hits to put Delmarva up 5-0. Josenberger's two-out hit was a three-run double. Etzel's two-out hit was a RBI single to center.
Costello eventually took over in the fourth and went on to turn in his longest outing of the season as he worked into the ninth with just one run allowed on three hits. Costello set career-highs in both innings and pitches he worked through five and 2/3 with four strikeouts, a walk and just the one run allowed while reaching 81 pitches (58 strikes). Catcher Jhonnys Cabrera pitched the final out of the ninth and was able to get a flyout from Etzel to end the inning.
Carolina's lone run of the game came in the seventh after Gregory Barrios doubled and scored later in the inning on a wild pitch. Reliever Luis Barroso allowed the double and lost the wild pitch that scored Barrios in the seventh. Barroso was the second of three Delmarva pitchers in the game and originally entered in the sixth in place of starter Deivy Cruz.
Cruz (W, 8-2) earned the win as he worked through five scoreless with two walks and three strikeouts. Cruz also allowed just two hits in his solid outing for the Shorebirds.
The loss ended Carolina's winning streak at six consecutive games and cut their lead in the series down to 3-1. The series will continue on Saturday night beginning at 5:00 p.m. with RHP Logan Henderson starting for the Mudcats. Saturday's game will feature a souvenir Brewers Weekend jersey giveaway for the first 1,000 fans with paid admission.
