Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
ZEBULON, NC: The Delmarva Shorebirds (16-23) ended an eight-game, road losing streak on Friday night as they defeated the Carolina Mudcats (26-14), 7-1.
The Shorebirds scored in the first inning for the second straight night as Enrique Bradfield walked to start the game, stole second and third base, and then scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of Tavian Josenberger to make it 1-0 Delmarva after an inning.
The offense broke out in the second inning as they scored five times, starting with a bases-loaded walk to Enrique Bradfield Jr, scoring Jalen Vasquez to up the lead to 2-0. Tavian Josenberger then provided the biggest swing of the inning as he cleared the bases with a double off the left-field wall, extending the Delmarva advantage to 5-0. They'd score one final run in the frame on an RBI single by Matthew Etzel to cap off a 5-run inning, now leading 6-0.
Josenberger struck again in the fourth with a single back up the middle that plated Mac Horvath, ballooning the Delmarva edge to 7-0.
That was plenty of run support for starting pitcher, Deivy Cruz, who tossed five shutout innings allowing just two hits and two walks with three strikeouts.
The Mudcats would break the shutout in the bottom of the seventh on a wild pitch, but Delmarva's lead remained at a comfortable margin of 7-1, and that would go on to be the final score as the Shorebirds ended Carolina's six-game winning streak with a six-run win.
Both starters factored into the final decision as Deivy Cruz (8-2) earned the win for Delmarva with Will Rudy (5-3) taking the loss for Carolina.
Tavian Josenberger led the charge offensively for the Shorebirds as he drove in a young, career-best five runs on a pair of hits that included a bases-clearing double in the second. Enrique Bradfield Jr. drew three walks, stole three bases, and scored two runs with Mac Horvath also making an impact with his first multi-hit game as a Shorebird as he doubled and singled.
Delmarva will go for a second-straight win over the Mudcats on Saturday night as Trey McGough gets the start on Minor League Rehab Assignment against right-hander Logan Henderson for the Mudcats with first pitch scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
