Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

Off a five-run third inning, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans took their fifth game in a row and clinched the series with their fourth win of the week over the Fayetteville Woodpeckers 7-4 on Friday night. The win pushed the Birds to a 61-44 record and 22-18 in the second half, while the Woodpeckers dropped to 45-61 and 15-25 in the second half. Friday marked the fifth annual Deaf Awareness Night at Pelicans Ballpark with the Pelicans wearing specialty jerseys and hats, and the team performing a "silent inning" with sign language interpreters throughout the stadium.

For the third time this week, the Pelicans tallied double-digit hits with 10 for the game. Andy Garriola (2-3, HR, 4 RBI, BB) smashed his second grand slam of the season in the bottom of the third. It was the Pelicans' eighth of the year, marking a new single-season record for the club. Rafael Morel (3-5, 2 RBI) smacked three singles with a two-run hit in the bottom of the eighth.

Yovanny Cabrera (6-3) posted a great outing out of the bullpen with four scoreless innings and a season-high seven strikeouts to take the win. Starter Kevin Valdez held the Woodpeckers scoreless through the first four innings with two strikeouts and just two hits allowed.

For the first time since August 1st, the Woodpeckers scored more than three runs, all coming in the top of the fifth inning. Sandro Gaston (1-4, 2 RBI) brought home two on a single. The other two runs came from Brice Matthews (2-5, 2B, RBI) and Ryan Johnson (0-4, RBI). Fayetteville dropped their seven straight game.

Starter Jose Nodal (2-10) sacrificed a five-earned run outing through his three innings to take the loss. Nodal allowed six hits and walked three in the loss. Reliever Jose Guedez gave up the two-run single to Morel in the bottom of the eighth.

The Pelicans packed five runs in the bottom of the third to take the early lead. With a runner on second, Jefferson Rojas lined a single to right to score Morel for the game's first run. After a single and a walk, Garriola came up with the bases loaded and lifted a grand slam to left field for his 11th home run of the year. The grand slam put the Birds up 5-0 after three.

Fayetteville responded with four runs in the top of the fifth. Reliever Gregori Montano loaded the bases and gave up a two-run single to Gaston to right field for the Woodpeckers' first runs. Matthews followed with an RBI double but was tagged out in between second and third. The final run of the inning came in on an RBI groundout by Ryan Johnson to cut the Pelicans' lead to one.

The one-run lead for Myrtle Beach was extended in the bottom of the eighth. With two outs and the bases loaded, Morel lined a single to right field to score two as the lead was pushed to 7-4.

Cabrera retired the side with two strikeouts in the top of the ninth to secure the victory.

Myrtle Beach and Fayetteville will continue the series on Saturday night at 6:35 p.m.
