ABOUT LAST GAME: The series opener between Columbia and Hickory on Wednesday was a 3-hour and 40-minute roller coaster that featured 21 runs, 24 hits, two ties, two lead changes and one walk-off. The Fireflies dropped the opener 11-10 when Crawdads infielder Tyreque Reed hit a pinch-hit home run in the bottom of the ninth.
GOING YARD: A pair of Columbia hitters walloped home runs on Wednesday: Ali Sanchez (5th career) and Scott Manea (3rd of the year). The Fireflies have slugged nine homers of their last seven games.
BALANCED LINEUP: Manager Pedro Lopez has been able to boast all season about just how balanced his starting lineup is. Columbia's hitters 5-through-9 (Ali Sanchez, Matt Winaker, Rigoberto Terrazas, Scott Manea, Raphael Gladu) in the order all recorded multi-hit games on Wednesday. Here's what the group did collectively:
- 11-for-22, 8 runs, 2B, 2 HRs, 7 RBI, 3 BB
...ANOTHER CONTINUES: Catcher Scott Manea doubled and homered on Wednesday. The Massachusetts native has reached safely in 14 straight games and owns an absurd .509 on-base percentage during that stretch (since April 21). That includes 10 hits, 10 walks and 7 HBPs.
MVP...MORE VASQUEZ, PLEASE: Jeremy Vasquez, the 21-year-old first baseman from Palm City, Florida, is one of the bets hitters in the South Atlantic League. The lefty recorded a franchise-record 29-game on-base streak from April 5-May 6 and is top five in the league all of these statistical catagories:
2nd, BBs - 23 2nd, 2Bs - 9
4th, OBP - .439 4th, BA - .327
4th, Hits - 35 4th, XBH - 14
WELCOME TO THE BIGS: On Monday, 2016 Firefly and Mets Minor League Pitcher of the Year P.J. Conlon made his Major League debut for New York. The southpaw started against the Reds in Cincinnati and logged 3.2 innings. Conlon struck out a batter, scattered four hits and even recorded a base hit of his own in his second at-bat. The 24-year-old is the second Firefly to reach the majors (see bottom right corner of page) in a matter of three weeks.
