Hagerstown Suns News Release
Hagerstown, MD - Luis Garcia extended his hit streak to eight games, but the Hagerstown Suns lost the series-opener to the West Virginia Power on Wednesday night 7-3 at Historic Memorial Stadium in Hagerstown. The Suns fall to 10-22 overall and will play the second game of the series on Thursday with a 7:05 PM first pitch.
The ballgame was scoreless until the bottom of the third inning, when the Suns plated the first run of the night against West Virginia starter Chris Stratton. Alex Flores walked and went to third on a hit-and-run with Aldrem Corredor singling to right-center. With one out, Jack Sundberg lofted a sacrifice fly to center field to score Antuna and give the Suns a 1-0 lead. Corredor attempted to advance to second after tagging up but the throw was cut off and redirected, with Corredor thrown out at second for the final out of the inning.
The Power took the lead in the fourth against Suns starter Matthew DeRosier in his 2018 debut. With one out, Deon Stafford singled to left and scored when Dylan Busby hit a homer to left field, giving the Power a 2-1 lead.
In the bottom of the inning the Suns plated another run to tie the game against Stratton and the Power. Cal Mitchell made a great sliding catch to take a base-hit away from Cole Freeman in right, but Yasel Antuna singled to give the Suns a baserunner. Antuna stole second and went to third on a throwing error and Anderson Franco walked. Garcia laid down a sacrifice bunt to score Antuna and tie the game, 2-2.
West Virginia took the lead for good in the fifth against DeRosier and Kyle Johnston on the bump. Kyle Watson singled to right and Lolo Sanchez bunted for a single. Both runners moved up a base after a throwing error by Garcia at third to put runners at second and third. Oneil Cruz grounded out but Watson scored, and Sanchez went to third. In the next at-bat, Chris Sharpe singled to left allowing Sanchez to score and give the Power a 4-2 lead. Calvin Mitchell walked, and Johnston entered the game from the bullpen, getting the final two outs of the inning.
Hagerstown came within a run in the sixth thanks to a base-hit by Garcia that extended his hitting-streak to eight games against West Virginia reliever Drew Fischer. Cole Freeman reached on a singled and stole second with one out. With two outs, Garcia singled to right with Freeman scoring to make it a 4-3 game.
West Virginia extended their lead in the eighth with Busby once again crushing the ball. Sam Held entered the game from the bullpen and Stafford singled to left. On the second pitch of his at-bat, Busby crushed a long home run to right-center to give the Power a 6-3 lead. The Power added an insurance run in the ninth, going on to win the game 7-3 while the Suns took their 22nd loss of the season.
DeRosier (0-1) took the loss in his first start of the season, throwing 4.1 innings while allowing four runs on six hits with two walks and six strikeouts. Johnston pitched 2.2 innings of relief, allowing a walk with three strikeouts. Held threw 2.0 innings out of the bullpen, allowing three runs on five hits with two strikeouts.
