LEXINGTON, KY - The Delmarva Shorebirds pounded out 17 hits, putting the Lexington Legends down for the count early in a 9-5 win on Thursday night at Whitaker Bank Ballpark.

Matthias Dietz (3-1) benefited from the scoring deluge to win it for the Shorebirds (22-11), allowing one run on four hits in five innings. He walked two and struck out eight to tie a career high. Dietz has now struck out 22 batters over his last 15 innings.

Janser Lara (0-2) took the loss for the Legends (15-16), allowing six runs (two earned) on six hits in three innings while walking three and striking out none.

Delmarva opened the floodgates from the get-go. Max Hogan led off the game with a double, and Mason McCoy reached on an error to put men on the corners with nobody out. T.J. Nichting tagged one into center, scoring Hogan to make it 1-0. Seamus Curran walked to load the bases, and Trevor Craport hit into a double play that scored another run. Zach Jarrett followed with a two-out RBI single to put the Shorebirds up 3-0 before Dietz even threw a pitch.

Lexington got one back in the home half of the first on a Jeison Guzman solo home run.

In the third, Curran led off with a walk and Craport singled. Three batters later, Ben Breazeale hit a grounder to short. Guzman tried for the force play himself at second but was late, then spiked the throw to first, and Curran scored on the error. Branden Becker then legged out an infield hit to bring in Craport, and Breazeale scored on another error at first base, putting the Shorebirds up 6-1.

Becker again came through in the fifth with a two-out RBI infield hit to make it 7-1.

The Legends started clawing back in the sixth as Nick Pratto doubled and Seuly Matias hit a tape-measure home run down the left field line to make it 7-3. Delmarva tacked cushioned the blow in the seventh when Ryan Ripken doubled and scored on a Becker bloop single, boosting the lead to 8-3.

Matias again put a pair on the board with a two-run homer in the eighth, but Breazeale answered in the ninth with a line drive solo shot to left center. Breazeale's first home run of the season gave the game its final margin, and Reed Hayes tossed a scoreless ninth to lock it down.

Breazeale finished 3-for-5 with a double, homer, RBI, and two runs scored. Becker drove in three runs on three singles, while Nichting and Jarrett each finished 3-for-5 with a run and RBI.

Matias's two homers were his SAL-leading ninth and 10th of the season. Guzman finished 3-for-4 with a solo shot and two runs scored for the Legends.

Of Delmarva's 42 at-bats in the game, 25 of them came with men in scoring position. The Shorebirds also hit into a season-high four double plays.

The Shorebirds and Legends meet in the rubber game on Friday night. Brenan Hanifee (3-1, 2.45) matches up for Delmarva against Lexington's Nolan Watson (2-2, 6.33). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m., and pregame coverage on Fox Sports 960 AM and the MiLB First Pitch App begins at 6:50 with Will DeBoer on the call.
