ABOUT LAST GAME: A crowd of 9,278 fans celebrated Independence Day with the Fireflies in style on Wednesday night. The second-largest crowd in Spirit Communications Park history watched as Columbia fell, though, to the Greenville Drive, 4-2. Edgardo Fermin launched his sixth homer of the season (tied for second on the team) and
Raphael Gladu slashed a pair of hits, including his fourth triple (also tied for second on the team).
NINE TWO SEVEN EIGHT: Wednesday was the second-highest attended Fireflies game in Spirit Communications Park history:
The top five highest-attended games include a pair of opening days and Independence Days and also the Total Eclipse of the Park game last August (Columbia played that day during a total solar eclipse).
HERE WE GO AGAIN: Blake Tiberi singled and drove in a run on Wednesday. The second baseman has now reached base safely in 17 straight games. It's worth noting the last game Tiberi failed to reach base safely was on
June 12-a five-inning rain-shortened game in Lexington (Tiberi only stepped to the plate twice). He's not the only 2018 Firefly with a lengthy on-base streak:
LONGEST ON-BASE STREAKS, 2018 FIREFLIES:
1. Jeremy Vasquez, 29* April 5-May 6
2. Raphael Gladu, 28 May 2-June 9
3. Blake Tiberi, 17 June 13-pres.
4. Scott Manea, 16 April 21-May 12

TEXT TO GIVE: Columbia's specialty stars and stripes jerseys worn by the players on Wednesday were auctioned off to fans with 100% of the proceeds benefitting South Carolina's veterans in need through RIP Medical Debt. More than $8,000 was raised from the jersey auction alone. If the campaign raises more than $12,500 by July 9, nearly $800,000 of South Carolina's veteran's medical debt will be erased. The initiative is made possible through RIP Medical Debt and everyone can still text to donate so the Fireflies' goal can be reached: text Fireflies to 50155 and wait for instructions.
