Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
SALISBURY, MD - Despite nine no-hit innings from DL Hall and Alex Katz, the Delmarva Shorebirds dropped a 1-0 heartbreaker to the Hagerstown Suns on Thursday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.
With the game scoreless in the top of the 10th, the Suns (4-10, 31-51) started with Brandon Boggetto as their free runner at second base. Alex Dunlap dropped an intended sac bunt down the first base line that nobody could make a play on, breaking up the Shorebirds' (8-7, 43-39) combined no-hitter and advancing Boggetto to third. Boggetto crossed home plate an instant later on a wild pitch, breaking up the scoreless deadlock.
Mason McCoy started the bottom of the 10th on second for Delmarva. After a Ryan Ripken groundout advanced McCoy to third, the Shorebirds were unable to make contact against Suns reliever Carlos Acevedo, who struck out Chris Shaw and Will Robertson to end a thrilling ballgame.
Acevedo (1-4) earned the win with four heavy-lifting innings for the Suns, giving up just one hit while walking two and striking out seven. Ryan Wilson (0-1) endured the hard loss for the Shorebirds, allowing the one hit and unearned run in the 10th.
The game's early stages featured brilliant pitching from starters Hall and Tomas Alastre. Hall allowed only four baserunners in his 5.2 innings of no-hit ball on an error, a hit-by-pitch, and two walks. Hall tallied a season-high seven strikeouts along the way.
Alastre matched Hall with a masterpiece of his own over six innings, allowing just an infield single to Zach Jarrett in the fourth inning. Alastre walked two and punched out six in his Quality Start before turning it over to Acevedo.
Katz took the baton from Hall with men on first and second and two outs in the sixth and got Jake Scudder to ground out to short on his first pitch, retiring the side. The only Sun to reach base against Katz came on an error in the seventh; Katz retired nine in a row to get Delmarva through nine.
The Shorebirds, meanwhile, had a scoring opportunities in the seventh and eighth, putting runners at first and second twice. Acevedo, though, quickly ended both threats to keep the game gridlocked.
In the bottom of the ninth, Trevor Craport beat out a one-out infield single to the left side for the Shorebirds' only other hit of the night. Acevedo then got Branden Becker to fly out and struck out to McCoy, leading to the dramatic 10th.
Jarrett reached base three times for Delmarva with his infield single and two walks.
Dunlap's bunt single was the sole hit for the Suns. None of the teams' combined three hits on the night left the infield.
Orioles 2018 first-round draft pick Cadyn Grenier made his professional debut at short for the Shorebirds, going 0-for-4 with two strikeouts from the two-hole. He fielded his position without incident, converting six putouts on the night, including all three outs in the eighth.
The Shorebirds close their series against the Suns with the rubber game on Friday night. Jhon Peluffo (1-4, 7.85) gets the start for Delmarva against Hagerstown's Kyle Johnston (2-2, 3.14). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. with gates opening at 6:00. The first 1,000 fans through the gates on Friday will receive a Trey Mancini bobblehead presented by Perdue Foods. Friday is also Froggy 99.9 Big Beer Friday and Orange Friday. Pregame coverage on Fox Sports 960 AM and the MiLB First Pitch App begins at 6:50 with Will DeBoer and Drew Williams on the call.
