December 17, 2017 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Flint Firebirds News Release
Flint, Mich. - Despite outshooting Saginaw 39-21, the Spirit used one goal each period en-route to a 3-0 victory over the Firebirds before 3,257 fans at the Dort Federal Event Center Friday night.
The visitors struck first at 7:37 of the opening frame when Nicholas Porco recorded his second goal of the season, assisted by Max Grondin. The Firebirds led in shots on goal 18 - 8 after 20 minutes, but trailed on the scoreboard by one.
Flint would dominate the puck-control game through the majority of the middle stanza. The netminder Evan Cormier (New Jersey Devils) would continue to blank quality scoring chances, totaling 28 saves across the first two periods. On the power-play late in the middle frame, Saginaw would utilize a fortuitous deflection off a Firebird defender's stick to extend their lead to two. Rookie defenseman Duncan Penman was credited with the goal for his fourth tally of the season, assisted by Marcus Crawford and Brady Gilmour (Detroit Red Wings) at 18:13.
The third period featured Flint winning the key battles, including an edge in both shots-on-goal and face-offs. Both netminders made saves at critical times, highlighted by Firebirds' netminder Luke Cavallin blanking a streaking Mason Kohn on an all-out shorthanded breakaway opportunity near the midway point of the period. Still trailing by two, the Firebirds would call Cavallin to the bench for the extra attacker with just under two minutes remaining in the game. Saginaw found a way to seal the deal with an empty-net goal at the 18:10 marker, scored by Damien Giroux and assisted by Caleb Everett and Mason Kohn.
Rookie netminder Luke Cavallin made 18 saves on 20 shots faced. In the end, it was Spirit goaltender Evan Cormier (New Jersey Devils) that would steal show, making saves on all 39 shots faced in the contest.
