
Firebirds Improve Home Record to 5-0 with "Pink Night" Victory

The Flint Firebirds treated their home town fans at the second annual "Pink Out Night" to a barrage of goals and some very physical play in the first two periods, holding on to a 5-4 victory over the Mississauga Steelheads, in front of a large crowd at the Dort Federal Event Center.
The Firebirds were decked out in their pink jerseys for the occasion and the jerseys were auctioned off after the game, with all the proceeds going to the McLaren Flint Foundation, in an effort to raise money in helping the fight against breast cancer.
Luke Kirwan, led the way for Flint with two goals and an assist and was selected as the first star of the game for his effort. Everett Clark also had a three point night with a goal and two assists, claiming the second star. Ryan Moore and Cullen Mercer added single tallies, while Alex Peters chipped in three assists and was named third star.
Goaltender Garrett Forrest stopped 31 of 35 shots for the Firebirds, picking up his second win of the early season. Mississauga out shot Flint 35-31.
Owen Tippett, scored twice and Brendan Harrogate once, for the Steelheads. Michael McLeod had a pair of assists in a losing cause.
The Firebirds scored three times in the opening stanza with Kirwan notching a pair of goals, his 5th and 6th on the season. The first Kirwan goal came at 9:23 with Clark and Kole Sherwood drawing the assist.
Less than four minutes later Kirwan struck again to put Flint up 2-0, at 12:53. Peters and Clark, with his second assist had the helpers. The Firebirds continued their first period domination scoring late at 18:36 on a goal from Clark and Flint skated of with a commanding 3-0 lead. Peters and Mathieu Henderson were credited with the assists.
The Firebirds continued to put the foot on the pedal, scoring twice in the middle period before Mississauga struck late in the period to ruin Forrest's shut-out bid.
Ryan Moore, scored his team leading 10th goal, taking a perfect pass just inside the blue line beating Steelhead goaltender Jacob Ingham, 1:17 into the period. Hunter Homes and Nicholas Caamano drew the assists.
Forward Cullen Mercer scored his second of the season on the power play to open up a 5-0 Flint lead at the 6:48 mark. Peters and Kirwan were in on the scoring play again.
Tippett put Mississauga on the scoreboard in the final minute with a power play marker at 19:48 with both McLeod's, Michael and Ryan, assisting on the play. Flint out shot Mississauga 14-10.
The third stanza was a completely different period as the Steelheads had the ice tilted in their favor scoring three times to pull with a goal, but the Firebirds held on to pick up their fifth win (5-3-0-1).
Day scored a second power play goal from the point at 2:19. Two minutes later Mississauga seemed to light the lamp again but after further review the goal was disallowed when it was decided that the puck never crossed the goal line.
The Steelheads kept coming with added pressure and Tippett scored his second of the game from Michael McLeod at 8:39 to make the game interesting.
With less than three minutes to play Mississauga tallied once more on a shorthanded goal from Harrogate before pulling their goaltender Matthew Mancina, who came in relief of Ingham, in a last ditch effort that fell a goal short.
The Firebirds continue their two game home stand on Saturday night as the Barrie Colts invade the Dort Federal Event Center. Puck drop is at 7 pm.
