October 14, 2016 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Kitchener Rangers News Release
Greg Meireles has a four point night and was the clear choice for the game's First Star as the Kitchener Rangers (5-1-0-1) defeated the Saginaw Spirit (1-6-0-1) by a score of 6-2 in front of 6,559 fans at the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium Complex on Friday night.
Jeremy Bracco chipped in with a goal and two assists and sees his season point total rise to five goals and four assists for nine points in four games.
Dawson Carty (5-0-0-1) earned another win in goal for the Rangers, making 33 of 35 saves. Evan Cormier took the loss in goal for the Spirit, allowing five goals on 26 shots in 45:49 of playing time before being replaced by Brendan Bonello in the third period. Bonello would surrender one goal on nine shots in just over 14 minutes of playing time.
After a scoreless first period, the Rangers opened the scoring on a goal by Connor Bunnaman, assisted by Meireles, at 9:40 of the second period.
The Rangers would go up 2-0 just 13 seconds later, as Dylan Seitz scored his second of the season, from Riley Damiani, at 9:53.
Just over two minutes later with the Rangers on the power play it was the Spirit who would strike, as Mitchell Stephens notched his second of the season, unassisted and shorthanded, to cut the Kitchener lead to 2-1 at 12:36.
As time was winding down in the second period, Dylan Di Perna's point shot beat Cormier as the buzzer sounded. Upon further review it was determined that the puck crossed the line before the clock hit zero, so the Rangers would carry a 3-1 lead into the intermission. Meireles and Bracco earned the assists on the goal which came at 19:59.
Shots on goal were 11-11 after one period of play, and 23-23 after two.
Meireles' third goal of the season came just 1:11 into the third period on the power play, assisted by Bracco and Adam Mascherin, extending the Rangers lead to 4-1.
His second goal and fourth point of the night came at 5:49, assisted by Giovanni Vallati and Joseph Garreffa, which ended the night of Saginaw starting goaltender Evan Cormier and saw Brendan Bonello enter the game.
Tye Felhaber scored his second goal of the season at 12:57 for the Spirit, making it a 5-2 game, from Mitchell Stephens and Matthew Kreis.
A pretty passing play on a 2-on-1 between Mascherin and Bracco ended with the Rangers sixth goal of the night, Bracco's sixth of the season, making it a 6-2 game at the 18:00 mark with Mason Kohn picking up the second assist to round out the game's scoring.
Kitchener was 2-for-8 on the power play, while Saginaw was 0-for-4 with the man advantage.
With four successful penalty kills, Heffner Lexus Toyota graciously donates another $40 to the Heffner Lexus Toyota PK Tally for a running total this season of $260 in support of Sun Life Financial Kids In Gear.
Bracco (KIT) (3), Bunnaman (KIT) (2), and Meireles (KIT) (1) were selected as the Three Stars of the Game.
Darby Llewellyn, Dylan Di Perna, and Adam Mascherin each wore "A's" and skated as alternate captains for the Rangers.
Kitchener continues its 3-in-3 weekend when they visit the Owen Sound Attack tomorrow, Saturday, October 15 for a 7:30pm start, then wrap things up on Sunday afternoon, October 16 with a visit to Guelph to take on the Storm at 2pm.
Please note: Saturday's game will be broadcast on Country 106.7 radio as opposed to 570 News.
