Erie Otters News Release
Coming to Guelph on a three-game win-streak but 0-3 on the road, the Erie Otters stormed back late in the game to win in the shootout 4-3.
Guelph, on a 4 game losing streak, jumped to an early lead in the first period when Nate Schnarr scored from the backdoor on a pass by Givani Smith. Erie, a team which has demonstrated an ability to respond to goals against quickly this season, tied the game 1-1 less than two minutes later after Christian Girhiny scored from an offensive zone faceoff. Guelph came back just as quickly, however, to take the lead on the strength of Albert Michnac's hard shot, again put through at the backdoor off a rush pass by James McEwan. Guelph held on to the 2-1 lead through the end of the first period, out-shooting Erie 10-9.
Guelph maintained their fast pace in the second period. Givani Smith jammed a loose puck through Erie goaltender Jake Lawr to make it 3-1 Storm, and Erie was unable to generate any significant scoring chances to challenge Guelph for the lead.
Erie wasn't able to sustain offensive pressure in the third period until Taylor Raddysh's power play goal from the top of the circle to make it 3-2, buoying the Otters' spirits. The Otters pulled goaltender Jake Lawr in favor of an extra attacker with one minute remaining, and Kyle Maksimovich scored his first goal of the year by capitalizing on a rebound in front of Guelph goaltender Liam Herbst to tie it 3-3 with 17.3 seconds left in the game.
3-on-3 overtime remained scoreless, and Erie's Ivan Lodnia scored the shoot-out's lone goal to give Erie its first victory on the road this season.
Both goaltenders made 34 saves on 37 shots through regulation; Jake Lawr didn't allow a shootout goal and was credited with the win for Erie. Lawr was also named first star of the game. Liam Herbst was in goal for Guelph's loss, which increases their losing streak to 5.
Erie returns home--where they remain undefeated--to face the London Knights on October 15.
